You think its fine to be spoken to like I'm some kind of social outcast scrounging from the state, I don't:)
I am not suggesting that you should be spoken to in any way. You have to decide what your issue is.
    • Is it a lack of respect from the adviser? - in which case, complain
    • is it a perverse decision to send you on a literacy and numeracy course? - in which case appeal
But don't get the 2 conflated. As I read your opening post, I thought the issue was being sent on the course. If the real issue was the lack of respect, then you are not quite making yourself clear.
You might as well ask the Wizard of Oz to give you a big number as pay a Credit Referencing Agency for a so-called 'credit-score'

I am a 50 year old male, have worked virtually all my adult life in good jobs and this included running my own company for 7 years, I own my own home, all be it mortgaged to the hilt :), yet now I am deemed by a off beat tramp looking advisor that due to me not getting any o levels 34 years ago, am in need of adult reading and numeracy class, and if I don't attend then my mammoth £72 per week will be withdrawn for 13 weeks. This is complete lunacy!!!

I have just lost my job on the 11th January due to another downturn in construction in my area, I am a qualified Bricklayer and have been a site manager for 7 years, I ran my own company, which i'm trying to get off the floor again, for 7 years and this was successful till the dynamic credit crunch.

Why should I let a dishevelled tramp looking guy with wolf on his name tag?? talk to me with no level of decency and just ignore my plea to talk to somebody else about the diabolical situation.

The guy was seriously non descriptive and seemed to be following a script which if I asked a question knocked him completely out of kilt. I am not happy and wish to complain to somebody
, I was that angry that I couldn't ask anyone else there and they were closing up as it was 5 oclock.

    Any help there please :)

Not quite sure how you've concluded that I've not made myself clear:question:

I am clearly unhappy about both issues, as i'm sure anyone would be.

I got through to the local managers office but they neglected to ring me back as they only had around 4 hours to do so!!!

OK, you know better than everybody else, whether it's those whose job it is to help you or those of us who are doing it just out of kindness.

I hope you come over better in interviews than you do on here or you're going to be signing on for a long time.

    Good luck.

Have you had a sense of humour by pass? I apologise if I've upset you with my reply but please explain how?

You don't mention the futility of the situation intimating I should embrace the dwp in there infinite wisdom on my future.

    Are you always correct then??

If you offer no constructive, thought out advice, why post, unless you enjoy gloating in others misfortune or indeed work for the dwp possibly:D

The JC is full of idiots following a system, following rules, lacking commonsense, lacking discretion.

    They become institutionalised morons.

They are just doing their jobs, like everyone else is doing.

Don't think your special as your just a NP number and collecting the money the same as anyone else is doing.

If you don't like it then sign off and give your benefits to some one who appropriate it. simple as that.

If you think there are a bunch of idiots, I wonder what they think about you in their heads each time you go to sign on.

Oh and by the way, I bet if you had your money stopped, you'd be the first in the queue screaming where's your benefits.:j

The objective issue is that they are sending you on a numeracy and literacy course which you don't need. No one can argue with that.

The subjective issue is whether he is a tramp or dishevelled or disrespectful.

personally. I would be ignoring the deportment of this person and trying not to go on the course. You are more likely to get a result that will be communicated to you.

That's what every clueless idiot says when there are faults in a system or things aren't working well, particularly civil servants.

I'm certainly not upset but but pointing out how your abrasive attitude is likely to get people's backs up seems to me to be constructive advice. In addition, you had totally misunderstood the course you were being referred to and having this explained to you seems to be useful.

The employment situation is very different from when you were last on the market and there's a far greater emphasis on paper qualifications than there used to be. I can't understand why anyone would turn down the opportunity to achieve additional qualifications, much less getting annoyed because the chance has been offered to them.

If you went on a literacy / numeracy course then you could learn the difference between there and their :D (here and there, or their toys)

Unfortunatly, there is this emphasis on having the pieces of paper to say you can do soemthing, inc literacy and numeracy, and they could even send you on an NVQ in Bricklaying if you had no qualification in this. It's all about having the right pieces of paper, stuff experiance as far as the DWP are concerned. Employers my well look at the same thing. I know an excellent chef who can't get a catering job because he hasn't got an NVQ in it. He just worked his way up from pot wash, but this counts for nothing.
As I said in my earlier post, the DWP believes that level 2 qualification is the answer to anything.
Have you considered getting a post as an NVQ assessor, or teaching young people in Bricklaying / construction? Apprenticeship? If so, you will need to have a piece of paper that says your literacy / numeracy is of grade c+ standard. Lots of places do a literacy / numeracy / ict test as part of recruitment. Even teachers who have a degree in English or Maths and have O Level GCSE C+ have to sit a test in Literacy / Numeracy and ICT to qualify.
Its not a nice experiance being unemployed and having to do all this, but that is the system and as others have said, the labour market has changed considerably over the past few years, employers are being more picky about who they choose and if you don't have an equivilent qualification and someone else dose, then your application will be the one in the bin. A sad but true fact. You are just going to have to swallow your pride, accept the situation for what it is, or get a job.
