when the MSE collective comes into effect in a few days time will everybody be asked for a deposit?
Hi Brand68
In the vast majority of cases, it shouldn't be necessary for Sainsbury's to request a deposit to bring over your supply.
This is something we asked about when we were setting up the Big Winter Switch Event II.
Sainsbury's has told us that it's process around this was in line with credit checks which other providers make as part of an energy switch.
Given the comments here, we've flagged this to Sainsbury's Energy and asked that it clarifies this on the forum.0 -
Hi All
It will only be in rare cases that someone will be asked for a deposit in the event of credit issues.
This is in line with our terms and condititions and is the same for other providers. It would be the same if applying for a Sainsburys Energy tariff outside of the MSE switch.
Many Thanks

2 1/2 years since your last post - welcome back :beer::beer:0 -
Those of you who have been asked for a deposit, was this in your welcome letter or another separate letter. I've today received the welcome letter with no mention of a deposit and I'm wondering if this means I've been accepted without a deposit or if I could still be asked for one later on in the switching process0

If you on a Sainsburys Energy Fixed product then you can switch to their latest Fixed Feb 2016 via Cheapenergyclub, then you will not be charged exit fees and will get cashback, according to cheapenergyclub.moneysavingexpert.com/collectiveswitch
Existing customers of all suppliers can switch to one of the collective switch tariffs via Cheap Energy Club, plus we've specially arranged for you to get the cashback on these tariffs too. You won't be able to switch to the MSE tariffs directly with the supplier though. Plus, if you're with Sainsbury's Energy or Green Star Energy you won't pay early exit fees even if they're due. .
Can you clarify? I'm unsure what the collectiveswitch is but am with CEC. Currently with OVO, but they offer a cheaper tarriff. CEC says it will cost me £60 to switch (as per OVO exit fees) & OVO tells me it will charge me the fee too when I spoke to them. If I swtich from one OVO tarrif to another through CEC will I avoid the £60 fee? Otherwise, swtiching to Sainsburys, with the £30 cashback is cheaper! Thanks

Took MSE Energy Club's advice in Sept 2014 and moved from old M & S deal to Sainsbury's Oct 15 deal. Move went well apart from both gas & elec couldn't be changed on same date - not their fault - but it meant that my gas tariff reverted to standard for a week or so as my old deal finished before the switch - next time I change I will GIVE 6 WEEKS NOTICE. My starting meter readings were not used but similar estimated readings were - this was soon sorted out. Happy with service so far.
Thanks to MSE I found out about the cheaper Sainsburys Feb 2016 tariff. After checking that the unit rates were cheaper I phoned Sainsburys & they swopped me straight away, obviously no charge for leaving the old tariff as I was staying with same supplier - but no cashback as I didn't go thro' MSE. My prices have dropped so win, win!0 -

I have no credit issues but have still been asked for deposits totaling £215 which is over 2 months estimated payments! Guess Sainsburys wont be getting my business as this is almost what my "predicted" saving is.0 -

They are not asking you to pay more for your energy: it is a deposit on account. A lot of the smaller energy providers ask for a payment of up to 150% of the monthly DD in advance of supply - particularly, if the tariff/contract starts in the Winter months. Only you can judge whether this is a reasonable demand but the bottom line is that you will not lose out financially if you leave Sainsburys after a year. This is a system account and does not represent a real person. Sainsburys are hardlly a small company. I have never been asked to pay upfront for energy before. The premise of it being based on a credit score is rubbish as I have no credit issue and never have had any.
I realise that over the year if they pay the deposit back that I will still be ahead but going byt the T&C's that others have already quoted there is no guarantee they will do that.
On a matter of principle I will not be switching to Sainsburys unless they drop this demand for a deposit. It is simply a case of them profiteering for no good reason.
MSE should be highlighting this deposit issue to everyone who looks at this deal an potentially removing their "endorsement" of it as in some cases there does not appeat to be a justification for the deposit being requested.0
