Add your feedback on energy supplier Sainsbury’s Energy

I think that you will find that Sainsburys Energy is a separate legal entity; ie, company. This limits the potential liabilities to the main Company Group if the energy company goes bust. Holding onto a customer's deposit when you switch energy suppliers would be theft unless there is a debit balance on your energy account. This is a system account and does not represent a real person. Thats if you switch after the year and they keep the "deposit" I wasnt assuming that the best deal after a year would mean that I would have to switch. It could be that the best deal is to stay put and then what?
As it stands I (along with others no doubt) am not willing to pay an unjustified deposit. I would rather take my business elsewhere. I'll see what they say when I contact them. If thdy stillinsist on a deposit then I'll cancel the switch.0 -

That's a decision that only you can make. I have just read Sainsbury's ts and cs and they will only use the deposit to offset any money owed. I would also point out that E.oN's latest 1 year fix (issued yesterday) would cost me an extra 23% compared to what I am paying on an E.oN fix that I signed up to 3 weeks ago. A bird in the hand.....This is a system account and does not represent a real person. To contact the Forum Team email forumteam@moneysavingexpert.com0 -

When i spoke to Sainsburys they said it was a new thing to credit check everyone and it was a totally automated process
What a disgrace - will not be moving to Sainsburys ...

Exactly the same with me. 5/5 credit rating with Noddle and never been asked for a deposit by any household utility provider in my life.
It seems that Sainsburys Enery / BG are attempting to boost their cashflow at their customers expense.
MSE Cheap Energy should not enter into further bulk deals with Sainsbury / BG as all is clearly not as it seems.0 -

Ooops, just realised it finished yesterday. Original post amended.
The ironic thing as well is that the BG rep I spoke to on the phone was actually apologetic and inferred this has been a common source of complaint.0 -
They are not asking you to pay more for your energy: it is a deposit on account. A lot of the smaller energy providers ask for a payment of up to 150% of the monthly DD in advance of supply - particularly, if the tariff/contract starts in the Winter months. Only you can judge whether this is a reasonable demand but the bottom line is that you will not lose out financially if you leave Sainsburys after a year.
I weighed it up and decided that being asked for a deposit was acceptable. If I could save £350 over the year and get nectar points and cashback then it's worth it. I just had to work through in my head that my 'savings' were in the Sainsbury's account, not my savings account :rotfl:
Just have to trust it'll be refunded promptly if I leave at the end of the year!

Hi Sean
We've asked Sainsbury's Energy to look into this issue as a few users have raised this on the threads here.
If you'd like us to escalate this with it for you just email collectiveswitch@moneysavingexpert.com and we'll ask it to look into this for you.0 -

Did your deposit request come on your welcome letter or a separate letter? I've received a welcome letter with no mention of a deposit and trying to work out if I've got through or not0
