Thank you for yours, Malc. I will admit some of my frustration is borne of the possibility of your disappearance from this forum. I absolutely loathe and dread the idea of having to sign up to Twitter or Fakelook purely in order to communicate with an Eon employee who knows what he/she is talking about. This should not be necessary.

The CS reps should be trained to at least an adequate level but this has not been my experience so far and I have now made contact half a dozen times by phone and chat. You seem to be the only person who does know whereof he speaks, given Helena has been unable to be present for some time. I hope she is feeling much better now.

I am sorry to be such a "difficult" customer but what can I say? I have high expectations... MSE is largely to blame for this. :D

Well, all righty. I have just spoken to a lovely bloke with the most gorgeous, soft Irish lilt called Mark; I could listen to him all day. He told me instantly that I can tear up the letter and stop worrying.

He was interested in what I told him has been my experience with Eon's customer service overseas and agreed we know not who will be in power come Hallowe'en, let alone in 2020 when, allegedly, "the government will make smart meters compulsory and they will no longer be free."

    Hallelujah! Recycling now.

... And many apologies, Malc. It seems you were right all along but I maintain that letter needs serious revision. I do not "need to have my meters changed". That is not true.

    Hi Malc

Just been looking at E.ON Fix Online Exclusive v7.

This says on the MSE site:
Tariff info: To get this tariff you'll need to arrange to have smart meters (one for gas, one for elec) installed.

    Is this actually the case?
I looked but couldnt find this tariff on your website and therefore couldnt check the t&cs!

    Thanks

Hello Greenenergy and thank you for your interest in our tariffs.

Smart meters are optional. Customers switching to tariffs, like Fix Online Exclusive v7, with a smart meter condition agree only to be contacted about having these meters fitted. The relevant part of the T&Cs (section 11.1) says:

With this tariff you agree to be contacted during the tariff term for the installation of a smart meter.

These requests can be turned down and you'll be able to stay on the tariff.

Fix Online Exclusive v7 isn't on our website. It's only available to new customers through certain Price Comparison sites.

Hope this explains Greenenergy. Let me know if you need any more information as happy to help.

I am currently With Green Energy UK but thinking of joining EoN for price with an Economy 7 tariff as I have an Electric vehicle. My current supplier provided an EDMI-MK7 3 rate Smart meter for their "Tide tariff" electricity and I have to give manual gas readings as they cannot access the EDF Itron smart meter. Can anyone tell me if EoN will replace these meters with new SMART meters if I switch supply of both Electricity and Gas to EoN and if so how quickly will they change the meters?

Hello brianscott757 and welcome to the Forums.

EDMI smart meters are a type we use for both electricity and gas. It's best to talk to one of our specialist smart meter advisors to see if we can use your existing set-up or if we would need to fit new smart meters.

We're looking to update many SMETS1 smart meters soon. This will mean we're able to manage them in the same way as SMETS2. It includes meters fitted by other suppliers and now supplied by us. These updates could be something relevant here.

They'll also be able to talk to you about a tariff specifically designed for customers with electric vehicles (Fix and Drive v7). I'd pop your usage (in kWh) on to one of the independent Price Comparison sites to see how it stacks up against other suppliers.

    Thanks for your interest brianscott757.

Malc, you're here! (I expect you noticed that already) I thought you had escaped and gone on a much-deserved holiday. I am a happy Smodlet. :j

Should I call and say I don't want smart meters? I am sorry, you must be sick of answering this question but that letter really does leave a lot to be desired.

Hello Smodlet and you're certainly not a difficult customer. Not by any stretch of the imagination. You ask good questions and make valid comments. Much of which I've passed on to management; particularly about the conflicting answers you've been given by different colleagues.

Helena's on the mend and going through a phased return to work. Many thanks for your good wishes. I always pass these on to her as I know she appreciates them.

As above and as Mark confirmed, please ignore the letter we spoke about. There's no need to contact us as you don't want smart meters. I've also passed on feedback about the tone and content of these letters.

Many thanks for your continued support Smodlet.

I posted this in another thread about Smart Meters: then found the specific Eon thread: Can I continue to Ignore requests from Eon to arrange a date for a smart meter to be fitted as I don't want one.

In the Welcome to Eon email under the heading:
    Getting Smart it states:
"We will be getting in touch to check your home is suitable to fit smart meters"
    Under the heading:
    Other Key Information...: It states
"we will contact you and offer you a smart meter, if you are eligible for one".
In the Important information box, you click into: The terms and conditions for this tariff.
In bullet point 11. T&Cs for customers on Fix Online Exclusive: there it is in point 11.1 "with this tariff you agree to be contacted during the tariff term for the installation of a smart meter.

While I accept it's there after some digging: it should be a banner on the switching site, they did this with BG and free boiler cover for 12 months its not that hard to be transparent.
Suggestion: A smart meter will be needed: Check T&Cs.

Yep, as my post above... Unless you signed up to a tariff which does require you to have them. It will be in your t's and c's. Mine say only that I agree to be contacted about them.

To Malc, you angel, :A; I'm surprised you are still speaking to me, tbh :D I am afraid you are wrong about one thing; I can be a very difficult customer when provoked.
  • Sadly eon head office are in some disagreement about the wording . They have advised that they disagree with Malc and have stated :
“ I can confirm that the tariff you’re looking at does require you to agree to being contacted (during the term of the contract) and having smart meters installed if possible at your property

I’m sorry for any confusion, the information provided by this office is correct. “

Feeling that eon are a bit shambolic right now ... and therefore might give them a wide berth
  • Update from the eon exec office : “We’ve just received clarification and I can confirm that on the tariff you’re considering, customers have to agree to be contacted about smart meters, but they don’t necessarily have to have them fitted yet. I appreciate that this remains slightly ambiguous by using the word “yet” so I’d advise that you consider alternative tariffs if you’re completely against having smart meters installed.”

I find that personally a poor response .

Seven hells! Sorry, what tariff did this relate to? Shambolic is a kind term, imho.

Paranoia is usually justified, in my experience. Sad it seems to be so in this case after all the months of protestations... Unless you have anything to add, Malc? You did say "at the time of posting". I hope you did not know the facts would change the next day.
