Eon energy reviews: Give your feedback

So either Eon are happy to leave you with potentially an inaccurate or even dangerous meter, Scrounger, or this is just another bullying tactic to force those who don't want smart meters to have them.
Is my meter safe? I don't know: I suppose if my house burns down I there a record (Jacky said she was adding some notes to my account).
I honestly don't know what more I can do?

That was my thought after I put the phone down - either the meter needs changing or it doesn't!

Raise a complaint and escalate it until you get someone who has a clue how to do their job? Not an easy task within Eon, it seems. Boy, do we need Malc and Helena!
The more I read, the more I have to wonder if the repeated reassurances that smart meters are not compulsory are actually true; if so, someone needs to tell Eon's customer service staff! This just is not good enough.0 -
Hi Malc
Just been looking at E.ON Fix Online Exclusive v7.
This says on the MSE site:
Tariff info: To get this tariff you'll need to arrange to have smart meters (one for gas, one for elec) installed.
Is this actually the case?
I looked but couldnt find this tariff on your website and therefore couldnt check the t&cs!
Thanks0 -
It's happened: I have received the paper (RIP, trees) letter telling me to book an appointment for smart meter installation.
Malc, Helena, where are you? Do I have a leg to stand on or have you been lying to us all this time? Seriously, what is going on? Either you are wrong or your online chat/telephone/letter-sending people are. Which is it?
I need to know as I am considering contacting Trading Standards about this. Someone is lying; who is it?
I, for one, am sick of this BS.0 -
I am currently With Green Energy UK but thinking of joining EoN for price with an Economy 7 tariff as I have an Electric vehicle. My current supplier provided an EDMI-MK7 3 rate Smart meter for their "Tide tariff" electricity and I have to give manual gas readings as they cannot access the EDF Itron smart meter. Can anyone tell me if EoN will replace these meters with new SMART meters if I switch supply of both Electricity and Gas to EoN and if so how quickly will they change the meters?0

<Rant alert>
OK, I have now found and read the t's and c's, paragraph 11.1 as oft quoted by Malc and it does indeed say I agreed to be contacted about smart meters. It does not say I cannot keep this tariff if I refuse them but neither does it say I can refuse them. It is all so foggy.
The letter states, in large, orange writing, "You need to have your meters changed". No, I really don't, Eon. The leccy one is only six years old so cannot possibly be near the end of its life yet. The reason I know this is we had to have a new one when we got solar panels, a date I can prove.
The gas one is quite old but works just fine (judging from its measurement of our usage and the fact nPower said it is) but I understand a smart gas meter does not work unless the leccy is also a smart one.
I know this has been said before on here numerous times but this letter is completely misleading and somewhat intimidating while the t's and c's are far too open to interpretation. The very fact this has been discussed at such length proves Eon's incompetence as this letter should, at the very least, have been re-written to reflect the fact cusomers are not obliged to accept smart meters.
My question now is, do I have to do anything? OK, I agreed to be contacted; they have written to me so surely I have met my obligation? Or do I have to call and say I don't want smart meters only to be lied to and bullied by some hopelessly untrained CS rep? I do hope not, for the rep's sake.0 -
I tried to switch to EON online today and failed because your online system does not work. It would not allow me to input my surname as I have a hyphen in it. The system clearly states hyphens are allowed as long as both parts of the surname are capitalised. Nope it doesn't allow them capitalised or otherwise. Same for names with a ' such as O'Neill. You might want to tell your IT guys.
Hello Scotbot and I'm sorry you've had difficulties switching to us.
Happy to take this to our IT people. May I ask some questions please?
Were you trying to switch through our website or a Price Comparison site?
If through our website, did the problem happen on the page asking for your details? Did a message pop up at this point? If it did, what did it say?
Were you using a desktop or tablet device?
Sorry for all the questions Scotbot. I've not come across this issue before and am trying to anticipate the sort of things our IT people might ask.

Thanks Malc for your helpful post.
Armed with this information I tried again without success - all they will offer to fit is a smart meter!
I called the number on the letter: 0800 096 1554 (E.ON Kingswinford, W Midlands) and this time spoke with a lady called Jacky.
After a brief discussion on the merits of smart meters, she went on to explain that ".. it would not be worth their while changing the meter now as it would have to be changed again in a year or two (when smart meters become mandatory)".
She flatly refused the fitting of a classic meter and once again advised me therefore to ignore the letters and that "I should be OK keeping my existing meter".
At least they're consistent with their 'advice'. :rotfl:

Hello Scrounger and have we confirmed this is a statutory meter exchange? Specifically, that the meter is nearing the end of its guaranteed shelf life?
If it is, we do need to change the meter. If not, please follow Jacky's advice and ignore the letter.
Should it be a statutory exchange and our advisors continue to insist on a smart meter, I'd follow Smodlet's advice and raise a formal complaint. There's more about how we handle complaints on our website.
I'm sorry this is dragging on Scrounger.

Malc, you're here! (I expect you noticed that already) I thought you had escaped and gone on a much-deserved holiday. I am a happy Smodlet. :j
Should I call and say I don't want smart meters? I am sorry, you must be sick of answering this question but that letter really does leave a lot to be desired.0 -

Hello Smodlet and I can understand your frustration.
As Helena and I have said in this and other threads, smart meters are optional. There's not much more I can add to my comments in the following thread (post #25).
https://forums.moneysavingexpert.com/discussion/comment/76017301#Comment_76017301
Letters are automatically sent to customers eligible for smart meters who switch to a relevant tariff as per the T&C you mention. As you don't want smart meters, please ignore the letter. We can't and won't fit them without your consent. You only need to contact us if you change your mind and decide to have smart meters.
The information we put on these Forums is a fair and honest reflection of the situation at the time of posting. That doesn't mean situations don't change. When they do, we'll do our best to let customers know. We're also happy to feedback anything relevant to those responsible for the decisions in question. I've done this with the frustrations posted on here about the various letters and other communications we send.
Thanks for your patience Smodlet.
