Thank you for your response and your patience, Malc and yes, I understand all this. My point was and is, it is all smoke and mirrors: What is the point of a Supply Start Date if both fuels have not, in fact, switched? It sounds like something I would expect from a double glazing salesman! Why not just wait until the switch has happened and make that the supply start date?

Ofgem-driven spin, I realise; I know it is neither Eon's, nPower's nor any other supplier's fault. I just happen to think it is pointless and akin to Amazon/whoever telling me my new pump for my water feature will be with me on x date but the water won't actually flow until it arrives two weeks later. Horse manure.

Sorry for the rant; I realise this is not within Eon's control but really, what else is this thread for? Surely it is better we rant here to you, Malc, than on the Praise, Vents and Warnings board where things can become... heated.

I am really glad you are back and hope your and Helena's presence will continue having said which, if anyone deserves a break, it's you and I hope Helena does not have to come back until she feels ready. :)

ETA: I don't recall anyone ever expressing friendly sentiments to the reps on any other supplier's feedback threads. Eon's seems to be the only one with... personality, warmth. You did keep me interested all that time I was with another supplier (and persisted on intruding on your thread) Malc. It finally bore fruit. That's down to you and Helena and to no-one else.

Please carry on venting and discussing on here Smodlet. No need to apologise or go elsewhere. Both Helena and myself don't take things personally and try to give valid answers to everything raised about E.ON.

Totally understand, mistakes are made and certain company decisions don't go down well. Also understand, there are areas outside of our control. Nevertheless, we try to be as transparent as possible and will hold our hands up when things go wrong.

It's a two-way things as well. All interactions are very much appreciated and we often give feedback based on experiences shared on here. This has led to significant changes over the years.

Helena's back part-time at the moment and will, hopefully, be joining me on here tomorrow.

Please keep your posts coming Smodlet. As I say, they're very much appreciated.

Looking at EON webpage, a couple of tariffs state Smart Meter is compulsory "Agree to have smart meters installed"

    https://www.eonenergy.com/for-your-home/products-and-services

Fix Online V27 gives impression S.M is optional "We’ll contact you to offer a free smart meter installation if eligible"

Someone is adamant elsewhere that EON told him in phone call

"Their new tariffs all include installation of a smart meter, unless you go on the standard variable tariff which is their basic and dearest one"

"if eligible" means if your area is installing them then you have to have one. I spoke to them 2 weeks ago and they confirmed that up to recently you could decline the smart meter but not anymore"

EON rep can you clarify please whether Fix Online V27 Smart Meter whilst may be offered, can be declined. - T+C quoted below :)

    1.4.2. Smart meters

"We may contact you at any time to offer you a smart meter. Smart meters aren’t currently available for some properties"

Hello bristolleedsfan and thank you for your interest in our Fix Online version 27 tariff.

Happy to confirm, smart meters are optional and you can turn down our offers to have them installed.

The T&C you quote (1.4.2) is in our general terms. There's another T&C (11.1) specific to Fix Online v27. This says the following.

With this tariff you agree to be contacted during the tariff term for the installation of a smart meter.

This takes priority over the general T&Cs.

If you go for this tariff, you only agree to be contacted about having smart meters installed. You can stay on the tariff should smart meters be turned down.

Fix Online v27 is only available through our website and some Price Comparison sites.

Hope this explains bristolleedsfan. Let me know if you need any more details as happy to help.

Why do companies insist on penalising existing customers. (MSE newsletter today). MSE should be campaigning (sorry if it is) to get companies to offer existing customers the best deals

Hello Martinjg51 and totally understand where you're coming from.

I'll feed your comments back to our tariff decision-makers.

Malc, I have been contacted by E.ON to say my electric meter needs changing. I called them to book the appointment but they insisted that they are only installing smart meters.

A young lady called Hannah advised that if I didn't want a smart meter fitted then not to book the appointment and ignore future letters from E.ON about changing the meter!
(Though she also stressed that changing the meter was a safety requirement.)

Can you confirm this this advice is correct?

I don't mind the meter being changed but don't want a smart meter if at all possible. Please advise.

    Thanks in advance.

Apparently, it is possible to install a smart meter and render it "dumb"... Yeah, I really believe that, too.

Yes, I've heard that before...

However, that was never mentioned as an option (it was all or nothing). :rotfl:

Hello Scrounger and you're okay to refuse a smart meter. They're optional.

If your meter is due a statutory exchange because it's nearing the end of its guaranteed life, then I'd certainly recommend it's done. This will make sure meter accuracy and safety is maintained.

Statutory exchanges are arranged through the Meter Operator for the area. This will either be us or an agent we've appointed. You'll receive a letter asking you to contact the Meter Operator to arrange an appointment. When you do, please make it clear you don't want a smart meter and they'll fit a traditional classic meter instead.

    Hope this helps Scrounger.

I tried to switch to EON online today and failed because your online system does not work. It would not allow me to input my surname as I have a hyphen in it. The system clearly states hyphens are allowed as long as both parts of the surname are capitalised. Nope it doesn't allow them capitalised or otherwise. Same for names with a ' such as O'Neill. You might want to tell your IT guys.

Thanks Malc for your helpful post.

Armed with this information I tried again without success - all they will offer to fit is a smart meter!

I called the number on the letter: 0800 096 1554 (E.ON Kingswinford, W Midlands) and this time spoke with a lady called Jacky.

After a brief discussion on the merits of smart meters, she went on to explain that ".. it would not be worth their while changing the meter now as it would have to be changed again in a year or two (when smart meters become mandatory)".

She flatly refused the fitting of a classic meter and once again advised me therefore to ignore the letters and that "I should be OK keeping my existing meter".
At least they're consistent with their 'advice'. :rotfl:

So either Eon are happy to leave you with potentially an inaccurate or even dangerous meter, Scrounger, or this is just another bullying tactic to force those who don't want smart meters to have them.

This "Jacky's" advice is on a par with that I received from Matthew Julius, who was adamant "the government" will make smart meters mandatory next year. Who knows even which party will be in power then? Matthew Julius and Jacky, apparently. I wonder if they will give me the winning lottery numbers for this week end...
