I am trying to buy the wireless router discussed here in this thread through ebuyer, but I'm not getting anywhere establishing Google Checkout account. After I have entered my details to create an account and press 'submit' he screen goes blank.

    Anyboby else experiencing similar problems?
  • Isigned upto Talktalk last year, they promised fast speeds, but I am only getting at worst 393kps,when I rang them about it they said it was because I am 5 miles from the exchange, so if I bought a wireless router will it be faster? I'm not very technical,, any suggestions please

tried to buy the linskys on ebuyer but sold out surprise surprise.will they be the same price when they get the new stock

Maybe, but the google £10 checkout offer will have expired by the time Ebuyer get stock back in as they are pretty slow and restocking items. Y

ou'd think they'd be quick since they actually measure their stock levels in real-time that they'd be able to order enough to reach them before they go out of stock, but obviously they lack that management skill.

No, going wireless won't make it any faster. It's only wireless from your house, so it'll still be 5 miles away. Nothing you can do (other than move house closer to the exchange) can change that. If anything wirelss can be slower if your signal strength isn't strong enough, so if you are struggling with speed, stick to wired since the strength is constant.

You'll just have to wait till speeds are upgraded in your area. Other service providers may offer a better speed if they have less people sharing but it's unlikely to vastly improve it.

Would this enable me to link my daughter's computer into mine?
It would be wonderful to get my daughter online (I'm just ending an AOL broadband lock-in) so she can do her homework and leave my computer alone! We won't be needing internet access at the same time; I'd just rather she kept her mitts off my desk.

In a word yes but only if you bought an extra wireless dongle to go with it. You just plug one into each PC and hey presto! you can both connect to the internet.

I'm going to attract flames. As an IT Manger with a lot of home users, please, please be aware that routers are not commodities. I have nothing to gain here, but the most recommended in my environment are Netgear, Linux based. Specifically the Netgear DG834G Wireless Modem Router seems to cause the least frustration interoperating with other cards.

And, whatever you do, please use WPA. Do encrypt, but WEP is now hackable in sub five seconds.
  • Hey IDVLON, just checked your FON site, it says that if you recommend me as a friend I get La Fonera for 20 euros that's the best deal of them all. Can I send you my email address for you to recommend me please ?

JSAM, what do you mean by "please be aware that routers are not commodities"??

JSAM - the reviews of the netgear item don't appear to bear this out!! What could the problem be? Setup/settings??

Look out folks for the fact that the TalkTalk router has been REDUCED IN PRICE so you need to buy more than just the batteries to reach the £30 for £10 off special offer. I can't work out if I need to spend £30 before VAT is added or including VAT.

    They have LOADS in stock.

Would it be too much to think that maybe this router is Mac compatible?

If not what is - and still cheap!
