What's the deal?

It's possible to get a complete home wireless router kit with USB wireless adapter (so you can turn non wireless enabled computers wireless) for £26 including delivery.

How does it work?

Web retailer eBuyer is selling a wireless router with a USB wireless adaptor for £29.99; a complete kit to get your PC or laptop connected to the internet without the need for cables. Factor in delivery costs and it comes to about £35.

However, an offer from Google Checkout gives £10 off a £30 spend at selected retailers, and fantastically eBuyer is one of these. This can bring the final cost down to under £26 including delivery. See below for details on how to get this discount.

How can I get one?

The specific model is the Talk Talk 54g Wireless ADSL Modem Router with free USB is available from eBuyer. It costs £29.99, but you need to spend over £30 to qualify for the Google checkout discount, so add a cheap product e.g. batteries 12 for 97p (and don't worry the 'Talk Talk' doesn't mean you have to use its broadband).

To receive the £10 discount, simply click the 'Pay by Google Checkout' button. Then either sign into your Google account, or register for one (it'll ask you if you want to) if you haven't already done so. After that, it is easy to make your payment, and you'll get the smart £10 reduction (for more info about the Google offer, take a look at this forum thread.)

Be sure to select supersaver delivery from the shipping options menu for the cheapest price.

What does this kit do?

There are two things in the box: The router itself, and the wireless adaptor.
  • The router plugs directly into your broadband connection, and becomes an internet access point for all wireless-enabled computers in the house. It transfers information wirelessly at a rate of 54mbps (megabits per second), making it plenty fast enough for most people's needs. It also has four standard network ports providing an internet connection if you don't need the freedom of wireless.
  • The wireless adaptor plugs into any USB port (a rectangular socket which the vast majority of PCs have, usually on the back), and acts as a wireless aerial and decoder, allowing you to connect to the router without the need for any cables. If your PC/laptop is already wireless capable, you don't have to use the supplied adaptor (though it may be easier to do so when setting the router up for the first time).
If you don't need the USB adaptor
  • Linksys Wireless-G WAG200G router £29.96 including delivery. This branded router, again from ebuyer (the Google offer makes it hard to beat, but remember to add something to get it over the £30 mark) has similar specs to the above, and adds extra security features.
Anything else I should know?

These routers are only compatible with broadband through phone lines; if you have a cable internet connection you'll need a different type.

For info about how to make you wireless connection secure, and other issues you might encounter, MoneySaver Fran has compiled an extremely useful set of wireless-related links on the Techie Stuff board, which should set you right.

I think he means if you buy the other type (non usb for £29:96) then you need to get it up to £30

Hi, just a question - is this particular router linked to the (in)famous Talk Talk provider ? If so, is this model of router locked to them as ISP as are some BT models (HomeHub) ? THanks, Matt

Or of course you could just go with the very reasonably priced sky broadband package for around 20-30 quid a month which includes sky tv (no sports or films am afraid) and broadband that gives an option of 2MB (i think for free) or 8MB for an extra 5 notes. Correct me if figures are wrong here... Its around about that price. Am sure there are other ISP's offering free kit but this one arrived through my door a couple of weeks ago.

This includes a free wireless router bunged in. Add a 4.99 (inc VAT plus p&p) 54g USB dongle and your laughing.

After reading the horror stories about Sky BB, I think I will give it a miss, I value my BB Connection too much to entrust it to a bunch of incompetents.

Oh and I would never sign up for any BB that required a long term contract like Sky.

    So, thanks, but no thanks.
  • Just had a look on ebuyer and the Linksys is now listed as £35.27 so with the £10 saving from google this would make it £25.27! which seems a great price

Just a note of caution for people - if you are intending to play games over the internet you need to have a router that will enable port forwarding and lots of then! I just had a look at a site and it looks like the linksys router will do this but no idea about the other one
