Do any of you have parents that drink ?
My mother is an alcoholic, as is her sister. I don't drink that often but when I do I don't stop. This evening I have drunk a litre of Baileys. I have only stopped because I have finished the bottle. I come from a long line of drinkers. I wouldn't say my grandparents had a drink problem buy they could put it away, as could their parents.
So what I really want to know is, does it run in families ?
Do you drink because you enjoy it or because it is there ?
I'm sorry if this upsets anyone.
I'm the only alky in my family. My brother (1 yr difference in age) is not one, despite the same upbringing.
I know a lot of other alcoholics due to what I do to stay sober, and many of them DO have alcoholic parent/s.
So I don't believe there is pre-determination to alcoholism, but I do believe there is pre-disposition.
'Alcoholism' is difficult to define - I didn't drink everyday, never in the morning, had a good job and was healthy and could sometimes moderate my drinking. However I believe I'm an alcoholic. I would never want to stop drinking when I started, even though sometimes I did manage to stop.
MY drinking was costing me more than money, in terms of self-loathing, wetting the bed, straining relationships, shame and embarrassment. Alcoholism has to be self-diagnosed.
I haven't had a drink for over 6 years but I'm just as much an alcoholic as I was when drinking.

Don't ever worry about upsetting people on here - we are all here to listen to each other
I seem to be the opposite as my Mum & Dad hardly drank at all - Mum because one small glass of sherry would make her tipsy and Dad because he was a diet-controlled diabetic so I wasn't around alcohol very much as I was growing up. I 'discovered' it when I started going out as a teenager. I have to say I haven't been drunk (or anywhere near it) for many years now but I was drinking just for the sake of it on most nights. I do seem to have that under control now (a lot of it thanks to this thread :T).
I did manage to stay AF last night so that is 12/14 for me this month.
Have a good day everyone and a nice weekend too0 -

Not upsetting at all and one I think about often. I come from a big irish family where drinking every day (couple of pints or so) was the norm. Then it became wine, and my dad would drink wine every day (my mum might have a glass but didnt really drink). All my brothers drink a lot, my sister doesnt. Growing up in that environment made me think it the norm, and it is only when I talk to people at work I realise that "most" people do not go home and have a couple of drinks before dinner, then a bottle of wine with dinner, and then carry on after that EVERY night!
I think I have a predisposition for sure. all my boyfriends were drinkers and my husband's father was definitely booze-dependent. We both know we are prone to overdoing it and have a problem finding the stop button, although we are much better at that now with conscious effort.
Not sure if that helps at all, but that's my experience...Sick and tired of waking up sick and tired...

PS I only drink wine. I am not interested in other drinks such as beer, spirits etc. I just love the taste, the smell and the whole ritual of pouring a glass of wine to have with/pre-dinner. I dont drink during the day.
One thing I am going to try this weekend is de-alcoholised wine, but suspect it wont taste very nice and it's probably easier just to not bother trying to find a substitute!Sick and tired of waking up sick and tired...

Evening all,
This shall be my last post for 3 nights! 21 AF days so far! Tomorrow OH and I are heading off up north to stay with friends for the weekend! This will involve alcohol although I am slightly feeling sad that I won't continue my AF progress! I need to remind myself that I don't have to be the last one left up drinking which has always been the trouble with me. No STOP button!

My parents didn't really drink, neither did my grandparents or Aunts and Uncles.Own_My_Own wrote: »This evening I have drunk a litre of Baileys.

I enjoy lots of drinks and would never drink something I didn't enjoy. I would rather give it away or pour it way.
By the way, I think there is nearly 3500 calories in a litre of BailysSo unless you are very active you will almost certainly mean you have gained a pound!!!

Just wanted to add a comment to the nature/nurture/alcoholism debate: my DD1 is completely teetotal. She gave it a try as a teenager, didn't like the taste and now saves a fortune!:) I think perhaps you can make a decision that goes right against the way you were brought up. For example, my MIL was what you might call disorganised on the domestic front. Result, that my DH and a number of his siblings are incredibly houseproud. So it can go either way.
Next, something strange to be posting on a thread like this. I bought rather a lot of wine in Sainsbury's this morning. One of my favourites was on offer plus they had the 25% off 6 bottles deal that comes around every now and again. The reason I'm posting this is that it's not something I could have done before cutting down. I was dangerous around a wine box as I never knew when to stop. Now I know that just because I've got loads in the house, I won't drink it any more quickly than if I bought one at a time.
