I was supposed to have an alcohol free night yesterday but let myself down badly. Between the lager and wine I drank a total of over 8 units, almost 3 times the government recommendations. I feel so fed up with myself.

Why can't I just stop at one or even two? I really want to be able to control it because I don't want to give up altogether, but I think I may have to go AF for a while if I want to sort this out. Does anyone have any advice on this?

I am so unhappy with myself that I feel like it is going to ruin my day off today.

Hope you are all getting on a bit better than me.
Kind regards from a rather miserable

Another AF for me last night, total 6AFD's please Shaggy :D

Slowdown - Don't let yourself feel bad, I too got like that, I was drinking a bottle of wine a night for the last few years with very few AF days. I am now aiming to stay within government guidelines but it doesn't always happen, 2 bottles of wine at the weekend takes me over that, & at the moment I think I am doing well considering what I was drinking before. When the wine ran out, I would go looking for other things to drink, things I normally wouldn't ie beer spirits etc.

Life sometimes gets in the way, you are only human, I hope one day to control my drinking as in I can have a glass with a meal & then leave it at that & not crave more. If I am drinking at the weekend, I do get scared that I won't be able to stop or won't get back to any AFD's through the week, I have counted Friday & Saturday as my wine nights but this week I drank on Tuesday so won't have any tonight, & I am fine with that as it kind of breaks it up for me IYSWIM, once I get the first AF under my belt, the rest are easier. My DH now knows I am cutting back & if I ask him to get me a bottle he will say you don't need it, I don't stomp off in a temper tantrum like I used to if I didn't get what I want. You are doing fabulous to have come this far, it takes guts & lots of willpower, we are all in the same/similar position x

macpep1 thank you so much for your post. I have been feeling really unhappy all morning and then I read your message and have cheered up no end. I think it just helps having people understand what it's like. I have been drinking too much for such a long time that I am fairly desperate for it to improve.
Like you my DH knows I am trying to cut down but he is working until late all the time at the moment so I slip up. I told him what I drank last night and he said he was sorry he wasn't here to help me but would make sure I don't drink tonight.
I think your post has changed the rest of my day as it has changed the way I am looking at the problem and at myself.
Thank you so much for your help. I am truly grateful and hope you are able to stay AF tonight too.

Kind regards from a much happier

And so say all of us!:D

I'm in a very similar position. Even though I've been using this thread for years I still need the lovely, friendly support.

I now find it easy to be AF during the week but at weekends I know I still drink more than I should. I know when to stop but my problem is I start too quickly!! This doesn't happen when I'm out, just at home. I'm in the kitchen and when the bell rings at wine o'clock (6 p.m. here) I open a bottle and I'm off like it's a sprint start. Instead of sipping and savouring I'm pouring it down my throat. Just typing this makes it sound ridiculous!:rotfl:

Even though the end result is probably the same I'm cross with myself that I can't be more controlled. Tonight I'm going to make a hot drink at 6 p.m. and try to delay the start.

Have a good day all, especially slowdown on your day off and macpep for offering the helping hand when needed.:):A

Just glad I was around to be of help, glad you are feeling happier now, and you have given me loads of support & made me see sense on here Maman :A. I now try at the weekend to wait until around 8-ish & only get one bottle so I know I can't have any more. DS has his anchor boys service tonight in the church so I need to stay AF for that & DH won't be in until around but he will call & ask me if I want anything in, & I will say NO!! :D

Same here so I now try and have a lime and soda or similar drink to quench the 'thirst' before gulping down that first wine.

I have just been to the doctors and admitted to how much I have been drinking (usually half a bottle of wine a night, often more at the weekend), obviously above healthy unit limits, and now have blood tests booked for liver function, kidneys, blood sugars, thyroid, etc.
Gulp, I'm hoping that admitting it to the doctor will be that kick up the proverbial that will give me the willpower i am lacking.

6 AFDs for me please :)

Going to London for the day tomorrow to meet my mum for lunch. Kind of looking forward to it as will be nice to see her, but also aware that uni work needs doing and I like my house so much I like staying in!

I booked a cheap train though so it take 2 hours to get to London, so I'll be taking my laptop on the train to plough through one of my essays so that will give me something to do :o

Not had any more drink since the bank holiday, not feeling like I need it, but part of me thinks it would be nice to have one glass, and then my head gets all confused about it and I think I am better off just leaving it for a while lol.

I don't think I want to have a glass with my mum, or even tell her I have had some wine, coz that will probably mean she goes mad at Christmas and buys loads of alcohol again, expecting we will drink it (which is weird given how my father died, and that she doesn't even drink much so you'd think she wouldn't buy much of the stuff).

Happy Friday people, keep well and keep going :)

Thanks for this maman. This is exactly the same as me. I can't wait to start, then throw it down like it's the last bottle on earth!
I have had a very good day since I came on here this morning and got some support from all you lovely folk.

Imagnu- I often wonder if going to the doctor to discuss it would help but have never had the guts. Good for you for doing it. Fingers crossed that all the tests come back fine and you can put off the first drink tonight. I am determined not to drink tonight. I will have a bath and read a good book, watch some TV and drink TEA!

Thank you so much for your support everyone. I couldn't do this without you.

    Kindest regards
