Any vote that isn't for the Tories is a vote against having a referendum, it's as simple as that.
  • The parties that purport to understand and represent ordinary people, nevertheless don't want them to have a say in the matter.

Probably because they know full well just how ignorant* "ordinary people" can be.

    *Adjective
Lacking knowledge or awareness in general; uneducated

Belief in myths allows the comfort of opinion without the discomfort of thought.”

Secondly, he is offering a referendum at the end of 2017 so 5 years away. By that time, much more damage will be done and it will be a case of shutting the door after the horse has bolted.

Why? Europe is forecast to be in recession in 2013. The mighty German economy is stuttering. So there may well be internal divisions within the EU. As in the national interest is where the electorate will vote as austerity continues to bite. So politicians may find further political and fiscal intergration towards a federal superstate a hard sell.

It may be 'it's the economy stupid'

so it may all depend upon how the EU is fairing in 2017 and how the UK is fairing (with or without Scotland)

Scotland wants to retain sterling. The UK might say no.

    An interesting debate ahead.........

    LOL, absolute class.

Labour have now reversed their position somewhat.

They are now saying "never say never, however, we are not planning a referendum at the moment" in response to "do you still hold the same position as earlier in question time".

The damage done to the labour party holding the "we won't give the public a say" appears to be doing too much damage. Now it's only the lib dems who are stating they won't offer one.

Further, Angela Merkel has already stated there may be some room for manouvre in the EU.

I thought what Scotland said was that it wanted to retain Stirling. Sorry, couldn't resist.

Yes Labour have been massively wrong-footed by Cameron & are floundering about in a most unattractive way.

Even with everything going against the coalition Miliband was too pathetic to make much of an impact. Stuff like this highlights just what an empty vest he is. Let's hope Labour don't wise up & dump him.

The UK could hold on a referendum on the matter. ;)
