Breaking news right now. OK, so it's "if you vote conservative", but it could force the hand of labour, meaning it looks more and more likely we'll get an EU in or out referendum.

And about time too. (though it will be 2017!)

No details at present. It's just on a breaking news ticker on the BBC website.
David Cameron will today offer the public a simple “in or out” referendum by 2017 on whether Britain should remain in the European Union.

In his much-delayed speech on Europe, the Prime Minister will promise that, if the Conservatives win the 2015 election, the public will have a straight choice between accepting the “new settlement” he will seek for the UK in the EU and leaving the 27-nation bloc altogether.

His dramatic move will be welcomed by most Tory Eurosceptics. But pro-Europeans will worry that he is opening the EU exit door –and that Britain could lose job-creating foreign investment before the historic vote is held.

Hmm, still not so sure. Cameron will make all the noises he thinks people want now, but it's strange how his whole EU "attitude" has changed recently.

I suppose the UK will definitely get a referendum after the next election in the same way we definitely weren't going to see tuition fees increase before the last election, or the promise to protect the funding of the NHS, or the promise of no more top down reorganising of the NHS.....

    Definitely maybe ;)

Ed Milliband has now attacked the PM for promising this as "weak" and not acting in the national interest.

What the *** is this guy on!? What can be more in the national interest than offering true democracy!? How is it weak offering a democratic vote on something that could ruin the government itself?!

    Total tool.

    "This time it's different".

Hate that line! But it will be written legislation. Not just another fake promise.

Lets see what happens in Europe in 2013. No point in worrying about 2017.

This received little news coverage today. Yet is a significant development.
EU ministers have given the go ahead for 11 eurozone members, including France and Germany, to prepare a new financial transactions tax.

The approval under "enhanced co-operation" rules allows the smaller group to pioneer the tax.

Governments previously failed to agree to impose the tax across the entire 27-member EU or 17-member eurozone.

The UK and 15 other EU members will not introduce the tax, which is intended to discourage speculative trading.

Ed Milliband is probably the only person standing in the way of a convincing Labour victory next election.

I bet David Cameron has a real soft spot for him.

  • The Conservatives have about as much chance of winning the next election as the snowman in my garden has of lasting until August.

    So no referendum then....

Ed Balls can be annoying and noisy, but then a lot of politicians are.

Ed Milliband is just a caricature without a backbone, an annoying voice and no gravitas.

If not for the trades union would he really be where he is?

    Camoron strikes again.

Honestly, this shower of incompetents seem determined to snatch defeat from the jaws of victory each and every time.

And you think labour are going to go into government stating "we won't offer you a choice, we know what's best for you"?

Labour may find their hand forced, especially if they attack democracy itself and try to take away our voice. Therefore, you may find yourself in your worst nightmare....

Don't let it upset you, even the guardian readers can see the problem with denying the people, though they are REALLY annoyed people will get a say. Like you! ;)
