"It depends". A fuel filter is a service item like brake pads, wiper blades, bulbs, oil filter etc so is treated as a consumable and consumables typically don't get included in warranties.

It shouldn't be failing after 7/8 months!? The talk about supermarket fuel is just a distraction - it will be produced to a standard - which the car should cope with.
  • Ask the dealer to put it in writing that supermarket fuel is inferior. Then send that on the Tescos, Sainsburys Wallmart etc. Lets see if Peugeot really want that battle.

Also ask the delaer to confrim, again in writing that Peugeot technology and supermarket fuels are incompatible. If they do this you could easily claim it's an issue between them and the supermarkets.

If they don't want to put it in writing (and they won't) I don't see they have a leg to stand on. All they've really confirmed is that you are not at fault, either they are or Sainsburys are.

As Supermarkets buy the cheapest fuel possible they are still buying summer diesel, this doesn't have the additives or preservatives to protect the diesel in the cold temperatures and this has damaged the fuel filter.
Diesel fuel has damaged the fuel filter?

How much are they trying to charge you? A new filter element (Bosch on a HDI engine?) is what, £10 or £12? And it takes 5 minutes max to replace it.

Ask them again what the actual problem is and how much they are charging to fix it, and why the warranty doesn't cover it. If they insist that the Peugeot fuel filter is not compatible with standard fuel ring Peugeot HQ, and ask them WT*IGO.

Or maybe they just damaged the plastic fuel filter housing (by not using the right tool) while trying to remove the filter and now they want you to pay for it?

As others have said, they are trying it on. Yes, the fuel filter is a serviceable item but i' assuming that your servicing schedule is up to date. That would be their only get out, if it wasn't.

Have you spoken to Peugeot UK customer service about this?

  • They are quoting me £140 for a new fuel filter and it is outside the warranty as they have stated to me its not a problem with their car, rather the fuel I've put into it.

Have called Sainsburys who have opened up a case to look into this, and have called back Peugeot and asked them to retain a sample of the fuel as Sainsburys may need to inspect it.

Good Advice john_white stating either in writing that the Sainsburys fuel is the problem, otherwise if they don't they don't have a leg to stand on.

Am waiting back to hear from the garage before I call trading standards, however when I rang them to ask about a sample it may now be tomorrow before they look at my car.

Does in in anyway allow me to leave the car contract?

Possibly but let's not jump the gun. I personally see the dealer backing down on this. I would be speaking to Peugeot UK customer service before anything else.

    This.

If they do put their decision in writing then forward it to the supermarkets as "Peugeot say your fuel's defective, please pay my repairs", to Peugeot UK as "Your dealer told me Supermarket fuel's defective, I'm suing them so please confirm their report".

When you get nowhere, pay the repair under protest and forward all correspondence and the bill to Watchdog as "Peugeot are refusing warranty or Sainsburys damaged my car, neither are admitting responsibility"
  • Essentially your right, it does come down to either the fuel is defective, or the part / car / technology is and they are refusing the warranty. Just not really the hassle you need on a day like this!
