do crest strips hurt the gums or cause sensitive teeth? also, my teeth are not exactly in a straight line, is it possible to 'mould' it to fit them? thanks
The reason you can't buy these things at places like Boots is because they're not licensed in this country.
Yes - they can do all sorts of nasty things to the gums, and there are countries in the world where that doesn't seem to bother many people.
They can make some people's teeth match the fridge too.
Heads or tails.
Falsely white teeth or some expensive damage. How to find a dentist.
1. Get recommendations from friends/family/neighbours/etc.
2. Once you have a short-list, VISIT the practices - dont just phone. Go on the pretext of getting a Practice Leaflet.
3. Assess the helpfulness of the staff and the level of the facilities.
4. Only book initial appointment when you find a place you are happy with.0 -
Anybody know what works if you have yellow teeth due to antibiotic poisoning? (I think that's what it's called)
Thanks.0 -
You probably mean tetracycline staining.
It's not really 'poisoning', but if the antibiotic tetracycline is given to people before the age of 12, then the teeth can be very deeply stained a nasty grey/brown colour.
This antibiotic should not be used in people that young, unless it is a life threatening condition, and no other antibiotic would do. Nowadays, there are many alternative antibiotics. Years ago, it was more limited.
It is possible to get rid of it if it's mild by whitening techniques - but it can take ages, and would be very expensive.
It is most definitely NOT the sort of thing you should have a go at yourself with DIY/Ebay products.
It needs careful monitoring and professional advice. How to find a dentist.

Yeah, that's it.
Well, my teeth are bright yellow. My daughter tells me that they look as if they are filled with water as well.
I will visit my dentist, but roughly how expensive would it be?0 -

I couldn't say without seeing the teeth.
A normal, uncomplicated case can be £300-£500, but sometimes dentists do 'offers' on it.

I too had problems with teeth going a grotty shade after taking anti biotics when young.
Last month I went to Warsaw with my partner where she had two bridges root canal work and a couple of fillings for about half the cost of what her dentist had quoted. she also had teeth whitening using a Laser system. The results were brilliant for her.
I decided to give it a go on mine and I had to have an extended session of about an hour and whilst the smile is not quite Hollywood white it is significantly whiter in appearance. How long it will last not sure but am happy with outcome cost £2000 -
Actually, I too may have the opportunity to have the work done abroad.
So that I know its safe and reasonable value for money, what kind of questions would I need to know the answers to?
I have read about peroxide % 's on the Net. It seems treatments vary and what is legal varies from country to country.0 -
It is a case of caveat emptor. We were fortunate that my partner had a detailed report from her dentist outlining the work she needed . Which cost a few hundred and I found out later would have been done for free in Warsaw.
I emailed the report to a number of websites in Poland . Note most of the websites act as agents for the dentists. When the replies came back we had a number of questions to answer and the selection process we applied was how thorough were there responses . The replies varied from "yes we can do that " through to detailed replies asking lots of questions. The reason we chose the company we went with was because they were willing to give contact details of previous patients who we could ring. Since teh treatment we have told them we would be willing to act as references.
They were not the cheapest quote we had but was the most professional.
Questions to ask
1) How many days will the treatment be spread over.
2) Do the labs work over weekends to make bridges etc
3) Follow up care
4) Get a quote on a tooth by tooth basis so you can clearly see what is being done and recommended
What was our trip like
Friday evening had an hour's consultation with two dentists who recommended and EXPLAINED the course of treatment . Ever have that happen here ?
Saturday - six hours of root canal work and teeth whitening ( have this done before any bridge or filling work so they can match colour to whitened teeth )
Sunday six hours of root canal work fillings and moulds for bridges
Monday fitting of temporary crowns and back home
Week later day trip to warsaw for crowns to be fitted. This additional trip was our mistake as we thought the crowns would be made over the weekend. If we had understood would have done Mon - Fri and saved teh second trip
Outcome very happy partner who now wants to go back and have veneers - I blame the TV - but will have to wait til she saves the pennies. No problems dental wise.
Would I recommend it yes. Would I do it again yes . Standard of care significantly higher than in England . standard of hygeine much higher than in England. Standard of interest in the patients much much higher than in England. The clinic we used was not just for Foreigners paying over the odds but was a local clinic in Warsaw used by the average person.
If you go to Warsaw then make some time to go to the "Warsaw Rising " museum it is a reminder as to how evil man can be to another man.
I would post detail of the company we used but not sure if I am allowed to0 -
I am currently having my lower teeth whitened at the dentist and have a small latex type tray in which to put the bleach solution. I having some more complex work done later on the top where I have a horrible national health bridge.
My bleaching tray and the impressions taken to show how they will improve my teeth have cost £350. In all the work will cost £5,000  but I am so impressed already with the effect on my bottom teeth (after two days) that I am determined to go ahead even though it will clean me out financially.
My problem is that my teeth are ultra ultra sensitive at the moment, shooting pains and on edge. Using sesodyne and gel-kam (dentist gave) me but that has been the downside for me. V. Sensitive teeth! Any help from you Toothsmith on this one?Grocery Challenge £139/240 until 31/01
