Interesting article reference Bott's excellent win on appeal against Jet2:

  • My wife and I were delayed at Manchester for 6 1/2 hours on a Thomas Cook flight out to Rhodes on the 18th of September. The pilot said that the flight had been "off line" and that they had been getting a crew together.
I have filled in a Thomas cook claim form asking for a refund of the outbound fares (total of approx £280). They have replied with a voucher offer of £50 per person (£100) as a gesture of goodwill.
Should I accept this amount or should I pursue the asked for amount?:(

You should not have been claiming a refund of your flight, you should have been claiming for EU compensation (which is a fixed amount depending on the flight distance) Start with the FAQs on the Thomas Cook thread.
  • hi,
we were delayed 9 hrs in manchester on our way to crete in mid sept.this was due a fault with the planes tail. we wrote a letter to tomas cook about a week after we got home, got the template letter off mse,to our shock we got a letter back today with a voucher for £694.!! what a shock!! we though it would be a big struggle to get anything off them.just goes to show it can be done on your own without paying a company to do it for you. thank you mse. i wouldnt except that amount thats really poor. as i said we got £694 back today, the holiday only cost us £1000! so if i were you tell um to shove it and demand more!
  • I claimed compensation from Delta due to a delayed flight (6 hrs) to the US which led to me missing a connection and arriving at my destination a day late. They offered compensation straight away which I was surprised at. The compensation offered was 600 Euros cash or 800 in vouchers with KLM/AF/Delta. To my regret I opted for the vouchers and my tale of woe began........

KLM seem to administer the vouchers, and all my dealings have been with them. When attempting to book flights from UK to Athens, I immediately ran into problems.

Problem 1: I tried to book 9 days before a flight, but they require 10 days notice. The vouchers have to be posted, by recorded delivery, to Amsterdam. My existing BA airmiles saved the day - 2 flights LHR to Athens for 20k miles and £35. Unfortunately there were no return flights available with BA, so I attempted to use the credit for flights back via Paris.

Problem 2: The vouchers can only be used for ONE person per booking i.e. any travelling companions have to pay full fare, even if the credit covers the full amount. Air France airmiles to the rescue this time - one flight on airmiles, one on the voucher.

Needless to say none of these restrictions appear in their correspondence.

It took numerous phone calls at some considerable cost to make the booking, plus about £6 to post the voucher to Amsterdam. I was told to phone KLM if I hadn't received email notification from them of receipt of the voucher after 5 days, by which time I was in Athens. I gave it 8 days before phoning. After waiting on hold for about 15 mins, I eventually managed to speak to somebody who told me that they had had it for several days.

KLM are supposed to be re-issuing the voucher with about £70 credit left which 3 weeks later I am still waiting for. If I manage to use the credit (it has a 1 year expiry from initial issue), I am looking at about £10 in phone calls & post to do so.

During the initial fruitless calls, the call centre staff were extremely rude and unhelpful - the worst I've ever experienced with any company in any industry. Had I taken the cash and flown with another airline, I would have spent about the same for 2 flights but saved myself 60000 airmiles and approx £100 in taxes and calls/post.

I can only assume that KLM are making it as awkward as possible to actually use the credit, in the hope that a good percentage will never use it. So be very wary about accepting credit from KLM/AF/Delta - sometimes something really can be too good to be true!

Useful post for the KLM board maybe
  • I wrote to Jet2 after a six hour delay from Manchester to Alicante in 2011 asking for compenstaion under the Regulation 261/2004. At the time we were told that the delay was due to the air-conditioning not working on the aeroplane.

Jet2 have writen to me saying that as the delay was due to extraordinary circumstances.

Is the air-conditioning extraordinary circumstances and should it take 6 hours to fix it?

    Hi all,

    Happy New Year!
In 2011 we were delayed by 8 hours on our return from Skiathos and left in the airport through the night with no food/drink. I have written to Skywings airline and had no reply and have also written to Olympic who have basically said it is not their problem and CAA who have said that it would be impossible to claim as the air carrier no longer exists. I have just read that Skywings Merged with the Ukrainian airline Khors Aircompany on 1 December 2012.....would it be worth trying them do you think?
Many thanks for your answers in advance!

    Sarah

P.s. sorry if this is not in the correct place....I tried to find somewhere specifically for Skywings discussions but only came up with one that was redirected elsewhere.

    Sarah :)
