Just need somewhere to vent where no one knows who I am really.
I make OH a home cooked meal every night ready for just after he gets in from work. He then faffs about doing nothing allowing it to go cold then smothers it in some kind of sauce/salt without even tasting it first and wonders why I'm annoyed. I cooked you a meal, just eat it!

Give him time to get in the door first.0

You could always serve the food after he's faffed about . Ask him what time he'll be ready to eat , tell him you've taken the trouble to cook , you want him to have it while it's hot . Then ask him to taste it before he adds sauce / salt . I don't really add salt to food . DH doesn't use it much , maybe on fish and chips . Maybe he's just got into the habit . Have a talk and if it doesn't work , let him get on with it ! Annoying for you though !0

I agree with the fact that I don't have to do it but I'm only working weekends at the moment whereas OH is out the house for 13/14 hours a day so I'd feel awful if I then said there's the oven, cook yourself dinner.
I do give him time to get in. Dinner's usually being dished up between 10 and 20 minutes after he gets home. He's also said he prefers dinner that soon rather than later on in the evening.
I think my biggest gripe is I'd rather he tasted it before drowning the flavour with some sort of sauce.0 -
Hide the salt/sauce then. Sounds like it is just a familiar part of the process of him sitting down to a lovely meal. Tell him he can have the sauce if he finds it ie can be bothered to look.
Or give him the sauce is a dish on the side, so he still has it available but again it breaks him out of his mindless routine.:heartsmil When you find people who not only tolerate your quirks but celebrate them with glad cries of "Me too!" be sure to cherish them. Because these weirdos are your true family.0 -
my ex called me an 'auto-condimentalist' as i add salt & pepper to food before tasting it. But I LIKE salty food, and the taste of pepper, and tomato sauce

Some meals go really well with tomato sauce, you'd be surprised
EDIT : cheese on toast for instance is great with brown sauce..
Maybe when you put the meal on the table, don't put the condiments out?0 -
Let him eat his meal the way he likes it! I'm sure he appreciates the effort you've gone to.
Swap the salt for a low sodium one if you're worried about his health.
Otherwise leave him be. You don't have to eat it like that.0 -
So you cook something to give you both pleasure and then want to control how he eats it?
he enjoys it with salt and sauce, let him enjoy it!0 -
My OH used to swamp his dinner with salt until I hid the salt! I couldnt eat anything his mum cooked she was so 'generous' with it! OH soon found that his liking for salt disappeared within a couple of weeks and he is even worse than me now - puts the minimum of salt in cooking and looks disapproving if you put salt on!
There is a good reason too for limiting salt intake - its strongly linked to stomach cancer, which MIL died of. In fact the first thing her consultant said to us when she was diagnosed was 'I bet she loves her salt'! it can also cause stomach ulcers too - which also can be fatal. If you value your health - hide the salt!0 -
My OH uses tabasco...I add it into the meal, he adds more without tasting.
I took to following him around with a teaspoon of the sauce saying try this...thinking if he said it was fine he wouldn't do it...he'd say fine - then add tabasco!!
I just let him get on with it now.
