I wonder if this is theft?0

Frankly to get the computer back (and all of it's sensitive details) I'd just suck it up, pay the amount they request, remove the card, price it up, and take the people to court.
It sucks yes, to lose that amount of money, but I'd be suspicious of what information of mine they had ready access to.
If you have not already done so:- Change all log in details of all accounts you have of everywhere you have registered (especially if you save your passwords on your computer)
- Change your internet/phone banking details if you had anything relating to them on your computer. Log in numbers, passwords, or saved statements/files.
- Change your email password and update the details needed to reset password on email.
- If you ebay, or paypal, change those too.
At the very minimum the above should be done.
Frankly I'm disappointed in all of the !!!!!ing replies over what is what and on wards that no one has even considered to tell you do this first off.4.8kWp 12x400W Longhi 9.6 kWh battery Giv-hy 5.0 Inverter, WSW facing Essex . Hi all, I now know that the person I spoke to at the nick was a civillian phone operator not a policeman, I should have asked to be put through to the right person.
The local paper are going to run a story on it, I asked them to wait to see what the Trading Standards are going to do first, the reporter said she would check with them first and also ring the Click4pc to see what they have to say.
Five minutes after putting the phone down a man rang me screeming down the phone, I told him I did not know who he was and he had to calm down so I could understand him, He said he was a freelance engineer and he had my computer and Click4pc owe him a lot of money and he can't get paid, he would not give me his name.
Very soon after I had 2 more calls from Click and this man rang again, he said "I am outside your door,it is the one with a green gate isn't it" when I said no he cut the line off, no one in my road has a green gate.
In the doctors surgery this morning I was told of 2 more people that have been stung.

Hi all,
I still have not got my PC back and I don't see that I will so now I am determined to chase this bloke, I have found out that he does not have a shop in Eastgate Basildon, I have found on www.tellows.co.uk he is advertising addresses all over a wide area, but the phone number 01268 200962 is registered to a place about a mile from Eastgate so when you think you are ringing a shop your not.
I got the chap next door to me to ring and say he wanted to take his laptop in to them on Saturday and could they tell him what floor in Eastgate the shop was, the bloke said no you don't come to me, I come and pick it up from you and bring it back.
I phoned Yell costomer service and told them I think the bloke is using them for his scam and they gave me the address of the legal people and asked me to tell them all that I know and they will deal with it.
I'm going back to the police tomorrow with my dossier.
one of my son's has offered me a PC that he no longer uses so I can at least get back to my hobby of family history.
I appreciate all your help thank you Drinda.0 -
Hi I have been to the police station to-day and they now say it IS theft and they have put it through to the Crime Bureau and they are going to deal with it. I asked them if anyone else had reported anything like this, the police officer said no, but probably because people would have believed it was a civil matter and that is harder to chase so they don't bother, I told her that is what I was told when I rang them last week.
I said I was going to post cards in the newsagents window in the hope other people would get in contact, but she said thats OK, but advised me not to as there could be repercussions.
I had a drive round the area where the phone number is registered to in the hope of spotting his van, it is a very rough place.
Thank you Drinda0 -
Some good news I guess in that the police will look into it, shames it wasn't done earlier.

Hi all,
At about 9am this morning my husband found a large parcel left by Hermes Parcel Delivery I draged in only to find it contained a computer NOT MINE, it is a tatty old thing with parts missing, I rang Click4pc and the man that answered the phone said it is mine after I argued with him he said he will tell the boss when he comes in, with that he put the phone down.
