I don't do Conventional Wisdom (CW) now. When I was looking round for a total life change, I read about eating like our ancient ancestors did before farming. Humans were hunter gatherers eating meat fish & other sea foods, eggs, plants and fruit & nuts in season. We can't replicate what they ate exactly but we should be able to manage a good approximation which should keep us healthy.

My older daughter is Coeliac and cutting out grains made sense to me. So, no bread, no cakes, no pasta and no pizza etc. I even stopped drinking beer although it is actually less fattening than wine. Because I've stopped eating grains, a follow on is no jam and far less cheese. I also only have one cup of tea with milk a day, the rest of the time I take flavoured green tea.

The premise is that we humans are "designed" to burn fat for fuel and not carbohydrates and sugars that CW would have us believe. This actually goes towards explaining why we put fat on so readily when we eat too much. I used to get the shakes if I didn't eat on time.I KNEW when it was 12 or 5pm within five minutes. Nowadays, I can go a day or more without feeling too hungry because I burn fat and not carbohydrates/sugar.

This way of eating has worked for me and I will not be going back to CW and grains.

    Exercise:-

I started of on a rowing machine. 20 seconds flat out, get breath back and repeat twice. That's a minute a day. Anybody can do a minute a day, twice or three times a week. Michael Mosley did it on a static cycle. Sprinting is just as good and doesn't need any special gear.

Strength training. Five exercises taking a minute to 1.5 minutes each. once a week. I did this and made great improvements in strength but realised that it was not working all muscles effectively.

Body weight exercise. This is what I am doing now and it can be done with no special equipment. I bought the iPad version of You Are Your Own Gym. There are a lot of good ideas for how to exercise using just the weight of your own body. Ladies, strength training does not necessarily mean you will end up looking like Arnie Schwartzenegger, in 99% of cases you'll just be stronger. I don't look as though I have put on muscle but I can certainly manage heavier weights now.

I sold my rowing machine and bought a tower for doing pull ups, chin ups and dips. Can't manage one yet but I'm working on it. I do squats with weight in a rucksack, press ups against the side of the bath, dips between chairs with feet resting on the floor, sit ups or plank depending on how I feel and I do have some weights I bought 15 years ago and never used. I do different arm and shoulder exercises with the 10lb dumbbells.

I didn't up the amount of exercise I do until I was fairly sure that I was using fat for fuel and would not get hungry. I time my hard workouts just before I eat lunch because apparently one should eat protein and some carbohydrate within 45 minutes of hard effort.

  • Can I come and play too?

Was doing well last year but think I've put on atleast a stone over the winter (will weigh myself in the morning!)

I also followed a Paleo eating plan last year and it worked well. I lost my mid afternoon slump and generally had more energy. Am lactose intolerant and wheat doesn't seem to sit too well with me either so this life style addressed these problems and my daily upset stomach pretty much disappeared.

Temptations over Xmas have ruined this and I now feel generally rubbish so a ten week back on the wagon challenge could be just the ticket to motivate me again :)

13st 2lbs this morning. I was 13st 1lb just before Christmas and reckon I'd put on 3lbs by the time we came back from our younger daughter's on the 6th. So that's about 1lb a week weight loss.

I think I'll cut out my weekend wine and supper handful of nuts & seeds. If that doesn't work, I'll stop my Wednesday wine and having my wife's home made soups at lunch time too.

  • Ok got a starting weight of 143.8, better than I thought as was 147 at beginning of January.
Tend to weigh myself in pounds as if I use stones I get more hung up on the numbers :o

Good day so far with fruit for brekkie, meat n veg for lunch, and knocked up first attempt at stewed plums as I always get a bit of a sweet tooth on in the evenings so trying to forward plan for that.

    Good luck peoples :D

Can I join in too? Weight has been going up over last few years. Used to do loads of exercise but not doing much at all. I know I am now somewhere near to 10 stone - I'll weigh myself tomorrow morning.

Giving myself until 1st April to lose somewhere near to a stone (or at least half a stone!).

Currently ill though so won't manage to do much exercise until I feel better. Thinking about starting with the 30 day shred which is on you tube. Also almost finished uni course so should have some more time to think about my health.

I'm going to try to limit carbs especially bread (and cakes!) and eat 3 meals a day. Snacks to be v healthy and nutritionally dense.
