Son injured at nursery!! X

  • Don't get me wrong I do know that accidents happen of course they do but even the nurse said that something had to go through his ear to cause his injury. If he did just fall into there don't you think there would be blood of the side from we're he had hit it? There was no blood at all. They said they have not cleaned it or wiped it down. In just not sure whether that was the correct place he had his accident

The reason they said that he had "hurt" his ear rather than something had punctured it is that they didn't want you to panic and have an accident on the way there!

I'd let them do their report and see what it says. To be honest, they seem to be doing the right thing. He was climbing on something and fell down and cut his ear. A rounded edge could cause this sort of cut it moved against the ear with pressure. Sometimes it's quite difficult to work out what caused the cut, as it wouldn't bleed 'til afterwards, so there'd be no blood on the surface.

No, I am not perfect, but yes I do judge people on their use of basic English language. If you didn't know the above, then learn it! (If English is your second language, then you are forgiven!)

I wouldn't be overly concerned with my child getting injured...these things do happen every so often...but a couple of things you've said haven't quite sat right with me:

My son is only 2 and half years old so can't really say what happened. The two carer's had there back turned. 1 was doing snack and the other one did go over to my son and asked my son to get down and he said no so she turned her back and aparantly as she was walking away she heard the scream and turned round and he was in the box

Why would she be walking away? She'd seen he was in a dangerous position, he'd refused to get down, so she just left him there? Eh?

I am only guessing that the report will only say what they have told me. She said that after the full report of the incident that its upto me what I do. This is where i don't know what my options are and neither does she. She said that she has never been had a child injury themselves so much that he has to go to hospital. I am awaiting the hospital report my doctors are trying to speed things up for me to have it. She had said that she was filling all the accident book out I havnt sighed anything which usually I do. Can ofstead get the hospital notes without my consent?

I can't believe that the manager doesn't know exactly what the process is here...my mum runs a pre-school and the amount of training they have to go to about this stuff, the policies that need to be in place etc...Also, even the best of these places have the occasional kid sent to hospital...of course they do...kids bump their heads, they swallow stuff, they fall on things....Either this woman must be quite new in the job, or she must've been very lucky not to see the odd kid be taken off for a once-over...

You said that there was a plastic plate in the box? Your son is only little - I wonder if his head hit the raised edge of the plate very hard, even if it wasn't sharp, the pressure might have been enough to cut his ear, which must be quite soft at that age?

This could have indeed have caused the split in his ear, just blunt force. :(

Are there any elder children of friends who saw what happened? Why would an adult nursery worker walk away from a two year old they had asked to get down from something, that doesn't make sense but unless you find out different this appears to be their story.

Hope your little man recovers quickly, at least he isn't traumatised so hopefully nothing untoward did happen. Xx

    Happy moneysaving all.
  • They didn't know that it had gone through his ear to his head I told them that today on the phone before I went in there.

THis has obviously upset you a lot, but unless you are trying to find out if can sue (is that what the rights question was about?) then It hink you should leave it.

Accidents do happen and it's not possible for anyone to watch all children all the time. The nursery seem to have tried hard to work out what happened but unfortunately they can't.

It is possible for blunt objects to cause cuts and splits, and so it isn;t necessarily something sharp you are looking for.

Unless you are unhappy with other things the nursery does, I think I'd let it go.

  • Some of the weirdest injuries can happen from some tiny falls.

My daughter tripped on a bean bag at a friend's house and she split her lip. You wouldn't believe such a soft item would cause an injury like that, but it is possible.

If your DS is not scared about going back in, I wouldn't be unduly worried, unless you have heard any other stories from other parents.

    Accidents do happen
  • Although accidents do happen, I am a little concerned that there were only two staff on duty. How many children were there? At age 2-3, there should be one member of staff for every four children, so presumably the maximum amount of children there (assuming no younger children) should be eight. This seems rather low for a nursery, unless the nursery has designated age rooms.

Has your child recovered or is there still any indication of ongoing suffering?

How long has he been at this nursery?

How many times has he been injured there?

Do you have any doubts about their ongoing ability to look after your son?

How relaxed will you feel when your son is at the nursery out of your view from now on?

Based on your answers to these questions you should be able to decide -

Do you want your child to stay at this nursery?

Do you want your child to receive care elsewhere?

Do you want to alter your life to become your child's full time carer and try to ensure he does not suffer any further injuries?

Once you have answered these questions you will have a fairly good idea of what actions you should take without needing any advice from here.

Once you get the report from the nursery regarding what they thought had caused the injury, surely they will have to give some explanation, then you can ask the hospital for an opinion on whether the injuries are consistent with the explanation given.

If it does, accidents do happen but I would question the nursery working turning her back regardless. If it doesn't, I'm not sure what you want to happen
