Angry Bought a Stolen Car without Knowing it

Why does it matter to you ?
Some of the HPI come with an indemnity policy that covers such events.
You appear "angry" that the op may have some comeback.
Sorry if I have spoilt the enjoyment.
To the OP, explore the issue and policy with a legal adviser if the check was sold with one.Be happy...;)0 -
+1 for a Troll. It does sound a bit far fetched. If the criminals had the nerve to pull this off then surely it would have been easier for them to simply 'relieve' the OP of his massive wad of cash, and not give him a stolen car in return. After all, he had no idea who he was dealing with, or where he was.
Spending 21 grand in an address that is not the one on the V5C is too big of a leap of faith.
And to top it of, his missus is pregnant. If you can afford to splash 21k cash at that point then you can afford to take the loss.0 -
Making an (Expensive) mistake and asking for advice does not make the OP a troll.
Calling people a troll seems to be a trend on MSE at the moment on certain parts of the forum.
.
Maybe not but asking a question that seems pretty important to them and then waiting 8 minutes, seeing one reply, logging off and not returning (up until now) points in that direction.0 -

Can you post any links to hpi companies that will cover you against buying a clone.0 -

How can the hpi company be liable if the op checked a different car to the one he bought?
I think you are talking about different things....
He didn't use a HPI company, he paid cash.....
He did do a HPI check! (With a company claiming to check the car is genuine)....
As I mentioned earlier and as spacey2012 say's these come with 'a guarantee'.
Now, it may be the guarantee has so many get-outs its unusable or it might be they will pay out.... but they won't pay out unless he follows their process to the letter! What to do next if you want to purchase this vehicle
1. Read our Buyers Guide. It provides help and advice about buying a used vehicle together with a checklist that you can take with you to view the vehicle.
2. Vehicle Check Data Insurance has not been registered against this vehicle. If you purchase this vehicle we recommend that you register the insurance.0 -

I know he paid cash.
The thing is he didn't buy the car he checked out did he?0 -
So depending what he did pay for in the check he may be covered.
If the VIN was cloned to the REG .... however they might have conditions to the insurance that have to check out.... such as check the milage and have certain documents like previous MOT certs....The thing is he didn't buy the car he checked out did he?
On mine I had to submit the VIN etc. within a certain number of days....
I'd suggest the only way to tell is their specific policy and giving the OP the benefit ....
i.e. which policy/check.... did they 'register' the insurance... are they still in time to do so etc. and what wriggle room might be hidden in the policy fine print?0 -
This is a really important thread to bump. While I would have thought the number of people shelling out £20k+ for a car on MSE would be fairly small, I can imagine quite a few of us buying a car or motorbike at some point and facing a similar situation. The point is that if you or I are paying £2k then the same rules apply. To be honest, losing £2k to me may be as bad as this guy losing £20k so let's all pay attention and learn something.
If the OP isn't a troll then I'm very sorry about the situation you've found yourself in and I hope that the police are able to do something for you.0 -

Ones a much more serious crimes in the eyes of the law / police and is far more likely to be investigated thoroughly than the other ?0 -

One's very simple, one's more elaborate. You're saying giving a man a worthless car for his money is better than just giving him nothing? And a man going to the police saying he had 21k stolen from his person by some unknowns isn't what I'd call more serious than what has happenned.
But of course it hasn't happenned as none of it rings true! At least it's raised an interesting hypothetical question about the HPi check.0
