I dont think you are being unreasonable, lost of people get into debt cos of being stupid and wanting new toys etc so expecting a nice gift for your anniversary and being in debt is fine if you can afford to pay the debt back.

    However,

The style of ring you want is similar to my wedding band, its platinum, quite thick with 10 tiny diamonds across the band. It cost £500. Engagement ring was £1700 and thats with nearly a carat of diamond.

Maybe you should compromise with hubby and look for something more affordable. High street jewellers are more expensive than Jewellery Quarter in Birmingham, where my rings were purchased from. We used Hallmark and the jeweller altered the wedding band to suit our budget and took off half the amount of diamonds (originally the stones were all around the ring and now there is just 10 on top of the band)

Compromise and I think Hubby should meet you half way ;)
Just owe Dad £2500 for a new car

Paid off car loan 22nd August 2009. :T
  • I got my eternity ring whilst on holiday in florida (channel set diamond ring only $200), It doesn't bother me that it wasn't an expensive ring, I was much more glad for having the holiday AND the ring, rather than just an expensive ring, at least we could enjoy the holiday together. (isn't that whata marriage is?)

    I've been Money Tipped!
Jewellery is in my opinion a real waste of money and the same goes for make up. It is just another way of spending money needlessly.

A like minded soul...I've never seen the point of make up beyond being a waste of money and time.

    Does it bother you?

My wedding anniversary is coming up and I would really like my husband to buy me a diamond eternity ring. He thinks this is unreasonable as we would have to borrow to get it. I don’t own a single piece of expensive, quality jewellery. I don’t even have an engagement ring. My wedding ring only cost £150.

I am not talking about getting something so expensive the repayments would cripple us, but a debt we can manage on 3 years interest free.

Most of my girlfriends have at least one “bling” item. Some of the have several. I just feel it is every ladies right to have one lovely piece of jewellery.

    Am I being unreasonable?

This is the item I am after LOL

  With all due respect......ARE YOU NUTS?!?!?!?

The most expensive piece I own is my engagement ring which is probably valued around £200 if that! I personally feel that to spend so much money on an item that one can lose, it can get stolen etc etc is a waste of money unless you are rolling in it and can replace it within the hour! Don't get yourself into unneccessary debt! 90% of people don't know the difference between an expensive piece and a cheap piece anyway!! :rotfl: Myself included! Rather have a lovely, romantic holiday away as suggested on here! Much better memories! ;)

Reading this it looks like my wife has been spoilt then.

I've brought her engagement ring which was £1000, a diamond necklace which cost £250 and our wedding rings together cost £700.

I myself only have my wedding ring which is roughly £400's worth.

My hubby presents me with heart shaped stones, pebbles and bits of seaglass when we are out walking on the beach - I save all these in a glass vase and they are worth more than any diamonds

I have a couple of gorgeous diamond rings which my DH has given me over the years. One to mark our 5th anniversary, the other on our 10th. Both are valuable, but more important is the sentimental value and the time in our lives that they represent. Other than that, apart from my wedding ring, I don't own any other jewellery. They will be passed down to my children when I am gone too.

HOWEVER, I wouldn't ever have borrowed or got into debt in order to have them. DH saved for mine, I didn't nag him for them either! They were a gift which he wanted to give.

Maybe you should wait until your husband changes his mind, be that another year or 5 years. Surely it is better to receive a piece of jewellery knowing it was given freely rather than grudgingly.

nope - I am a "Next matching set" for a tenner girl. I have loads of silver rings but they cost a max of 50 quid most of them significantly less then that:rotfl: Couldnt justify spending £1400 on a ring:eek: by any stretch of the imagination but then i guess if its not you paying then its a different matter.

dont ask me the same question about shoes and handbags though please:o
  • Looks like my OH may be more lucky than she suspects... we just got engaged and went to Hatton garden in London to pick a ring. She knows exactly how much it cost as she did the price negotiation in the shop with me.

It is a 1 carat emerald cut (rectangle shaped) diamond ring. One stone of very good clarity and colour with only 2 tiny inclusions. It didn't cost this much, but we've been told to insure it for... wait for it.... £7800

It's a lot of cash to blow on a ring, but she's over the moon with it. She gets occasional complements from strangers, which is quite weird. I feel oddly proud about being able to provide for her like that. I originally proposed with a fake ring that cost £35 from a local jewellers - she wears this when she's at work (she's a nurse and rather afraid of loosing/being attacked for a valuable ring). She's actually quite attached to it for sentimental reasons :)

She is a very lucky lady!

My DH feels the same as you if people comment on my rings (which they do from time to time) and I do too as I know why he bought them for me and that they are incredibly special.

    Congratulations on your engagement!
