Thanks Annie have left a message for you in t'other thread :D

We have had two days now of thick black cloud but no rain, really strange as it's so dark it looks like it'll tip down any minute then it blows over.

    Thanks D

I agree re clouds, it's been so dark sometimes I've put the lights on at 6pm waiting for the down pour.
The sun came out today for less than 10 mins @ 4pm but it was behind the massive sycamore tree by then so I couldn't feel the warmth, but it looked nice :D

Hubby set up my potting bench for me and bought all my little peppers out for me to pot on. Standing is fine, so happy to do that, and used the hoe gently to earth up the tatties in the ground.

1 cucumber has committed suicide, the others are happy and 2 courgettes now have several flowers on them.

There's a lot less cat poo this year, I'm guessing the old one that died over the winter was responsible for a lot of it. And one neighbour that has 3 cats is moving in a few months :j So that brings it down to 3 from 7 last year shortly.

I wont use slugs pellets because of the birds, but I'm getting very tempted. It is frustrating when it happens but I guess thats the joy of gardening. I have a frog now in my pond so perhaps he/she will earn its keep.

Don't know how to tell you this but a frog isn't going to help. I have around 30 frogs in my pond, log piles etc and hundreds of slugs and snails.

I use slug pellets http://www.wilko.com/pests-control/wilko-slug-bait-590g/invt/0331176?VBMST=slug%20pellets end os season sale at 75% off;)
Not near the pond/log pile/bird feeding/compost bin areas but around my food area only.
I also use beer traps (sainsburys basic larger) they work really well too.
Some years, when we've had a drought I've not need slug pellets the beer traps have been enough.

We have a thriving bird population locally and I've never seen a bird eat a pellet or a dead slug or snail. In fact round here they're so well fed they don't eat them alive either!

I didnt think for one moment that the birds would eat the slug pellets but they could/might eat the slugs.
Treat other's how you like to be treated.

Slug Pellets have been on the market for at least 40 years that I know of, and I think they would have banned the use of them by now if they were indirectly or directly harmful to birds to any great extent. And in that case I certainly wouldn't be using them.
It seems that cats and dogs can be poisoned by them but we don't have a dog and I hate cats in my garden so much that I don't care about them just like thier owners don't care about my seeds growing.
  • I am feeling a bit of a traiter posting on here as I have done absolutely nothing in the garden this year (apart from dead-heading dandelions to prevent them seeding all over the place). Health issues have prevented me from doing anything other than that - oh well, I am nearly 80! Please MrB am I allowed to stay?

Annie - I am glad I am not the only one that looks at her garden through binoculars while indoors in the warm - makes me feel sort of normal somehow. I also sometimes zoom in with a camera to get a close up picture so I can ask friends what on earth it is that is growing about 50ft away that I can`t identify. Sorry to hear about your ribs though - must be quite painful.

Redlass - great idea about using storage boxes as cloches. I could do that if I could get round to planting anything - but then again, perhaps not as all my storage boxes are full of ...err....junk maybe!!

If you don`t want ants in your compost bins just add some water as it is probably too dry. Ants don`t like it wet and will move out.

Slugs eat pellets and then the birds eat the slugs - that`s where the danger lies. Same with snails of course.

another lovely day here, but sadly I've not had time to do anything in the garden. I've managed to put my back out by swimming of all things (really must sort out my technique!).

Hoping for good weather the rest of the week so I can get out a little.

Having said that, I have pinched out the growing tip of Audrey the Aubergine....just saying.

    I've lost my leeks :(:o
I remember taking them out of the pot they were in as it was very shallow and kept getting knocked over or forgotten, and plonking them in a spare bit of ground and now I can't see them anywhere.
I'm going to sow some more in the propagator and hope they pop up quickly. I'll do more than normal so hopefully I'll have lots of smaller leeks by winter.
If the others eventually make themselves known by growing, then we're having a lot of leek and potato soup all winter.

*note to self: LABEL EVERYTHING *

EDIT: The advantage of waffling on here is being able to read back and see if I posted anything to do with where my leeks went, and I did :D Apparently I put them in a bigger pot, that would explain why I couldn't find them in the ground today :rotfl:
I'll have a look at all the pots tomorrow :o
