Sorry for all the links but if someone could tell me which of these are good and which are bad (and why!) then it will really help me with what to look out for.
Most are Polos because I've been told they're the most likely car in this price range to stay working!

I've seen this automatic 1994 Volkswagen Golf with quite low mileage.

Out of the cars, I'd be most tempted to go for 5 or 9, the main fact being that they've just been MoT'd, so they should last another year (if maintained properly)
I was discussing some of our fleet vehicles the other week re mileage covered, and I'd rather go for a well-serviced, higher mileage car than a lower mileage car that's only been used on short runs.
This should be a question to ask the prospective seller.
My taxi is a 2004 Mondeo, with over 300k on it at the moment; another driver with the same car/engine only managed 162k, as it was better maintained than mine, but had been used on short runs.

1) Looks good for your purpose
Tax, had new clutch etc. IG=3
Polo's are fine but in your price band it's not that important as long as you stay away from certain known cars!
Essentially - if its had a new clutch then that's a decent start.... you could buy any and the clutch might go and cost you a few hundred ....
Toyota number 2 looks OK except its a dealer..(why are they selling it not letting it go in auction - this isn't a good priceband to find reputable dealers in and your likely to get little in terms of guarantees with consumer rights for a £500 car so why pay extra)... but I'd prefer a Corolla over the Micra (just to small/tinny)
edit
Purpose of car to build up no claims and get older for cheaper insurance so Golf Gti is probably not a good bet!Out of the cars, I'd be most tempted to go for 5 or 9, the main fact being that they've just been MoT'd, so they should last another year (if maintained properly)0 -
Ha, I forgot about the insurance! Golf GTIs are definitely out!

18 year old golf with 32,000 miles on the clock, But looks tired and dulled?
How many times did it go past the 000,000 ?Censorship Reigns Supreme in Troll City...0 -
Going to go against the grain here, but I'd pay a bit more money for a car that would last me longer. IMO I'd look around the £2,500 - £3,000 budget.
As with buying every second hand car, it's a gamble but there's much more of a chance something's going to go wrong with an old car like that - there's only a certain length of time a little Polo or Ka can run for.
I know you've changed your mind about cars from a higher budget but please, whatever you do AVOID Carcraft.
1. I've seen very bad reviews from them and the quality and aftersales service.
2. I visited and was immediately pounced on by their staff, I told him I just wanted to browse but he just wouldn't shut up and was really rather pressuring.
3. Their cars are pretty rediculously overpriced, even compared to main dealers.
How about something like this...
http://www.autotrader.co.uk/classified/advert/201301124889130/sort/default/usedcars/maximum-mileage/up_to_60000_miles/maximum-age/up_to_7_years_old/price-to/3000/model/fiesta/make/ford/onesearchad/used/onesearchad/nearlynew/onesearchad/new/radius/200/postcode/bn17he/page/1?logcode=p
Just an example, but statistically a 2006 car is going to be running longer than a 1996 one. More efficient, lower tax too. Just a thought.0 -
I don't need it to run for a long time. I just need to get a couple of years or so on it and if it turns out to be crap I just scrap it/sell for parts and only ended up losing a couple of hundred on it.
I can't afford to spend more without getting finance and since my first post I've since realised I will be thousands of pounds better off buying a cheaper car out right even if I end up having to repair it on occasion. The money I'd pay for finance I'm going to put into a savings account for such occasion. And if I don't need it I have a lump sum!
I just want to get the best I can for the price. Sway the odds in my favour
