We'd accepted 10,000 miles from them at the time of the delay 5 years ago, but were able to claim compensation with no mention of the miles. Not sure I'd accept the miles if you're making a claim of compensation soon after though as it would be more fresh in their minds.
10000 air miles is not a lot if you are delayed on a long haul flight. The answer is put in a claim don't mention the airmiles if you don't ask you don't get.0 -

I joined this forum especially to get advice on this!
I was due to fly to Thailand last night from Heathrow on Jet airways. I booked a Virgin Atlantic flight from Edinburgh to connect me to my London flight which would give me more than 6 hours between landing and flying out of London - I thought I had more than enough time to catch my international flight.
My 1325 flight from Edinburgh was delayed a few times then eventually cancelled due to technical difficulties. I was rebooked onto the next available flight at 1725 but this was also delayed and didn't take off until 1820. I arrived for my international flight 15 mins prior to take off and wasn't allowed to board and was considered a no show. The international flight was non changeable and non refundable and I was only refunded some taxes and lost over £400. I couldn't afford to buy a new return ticket at such short notice and so have had to cancel my holiday. I have also lost another £100 through cancelling my hotels in Thailand.
The man behind the counter at Virgin said there was nothing they could do for me and couldn't give me money for hotels or food. I have had to sleep in the airport and pay for a flight back up to Edinburgh in the morning. My insurance company refuse to compensate me either as they say I'm not covered for cancelled internal flights.
I am very sad and upset and have written an email to Virgin demanding compensation. What is the likelihood of me receiving any? Do I have a valid claim?

The only compensation you are due from Virgin, I'm afraid, is the €250 under the 261/04 Regulation. But Virgin tend not to pay this unless you take them to court (read all the stiries on the Virgin thread). They are not liable for your subsquent flight or hotel costs due to the cancelled holiday.
Your travel insurance policy should pay out however (unless you bought a dud policy).0 -
Seems that the 1st flight was a separate booking to the Thailand flight, therefore the missing of the Thailand flight wasn't linked to the cancellation of that flight.
So, no compensation payable except as vauban posts.
You could write to Virgin customer service and ask for a gesture of goodwill, mention loyal customer etc etc, but that's about it.0 -
well i just checked my travel insurance and apparently it doesn't cover claims arising from missed connecting flights - i can't beleive it
I send Virgin a rather angry email on Saturday night detailng why i was so annoyed and demading compensation - will have to wait and see if they offer me anything. Fingers crossed...0 -
Anyone trying to get compensation on VA flight Manchester to Orlando 03/06/08. I've just had the usual EC rejection letter as it was technical problem with bolt for fuel pump on an aircraft at gatwick the previous day.
We had 4hr 22 delay.
We have now sent a NBA letter to VA.0 -
It has now been over 15 weeks since receiving my first letter from Virgin saying they'll respond in 6-12 weeks, what do I need to do now? Any advice would be appreciated0

Ring them? Write again? Write a NBA letter, as a prelude to legal action? Instruct a No Win No Fee company? Or walk away and forget it? Are there any other options?0 -
