Have you read Vauban's guide as suggested by 111KAB? That should give you a good idea what the law is and the process for making a claim.

if it was cancelled due the strike there is no compensation due. You are however entitled to reimbursement of refreshments etc during the delay (and accommodation if relevant) just send in your receipts claiming EU261 Duty of Care
There is nothing in the regulations that airlines must offer reroutes on other airlines....Ryanair should have advised when the next available flight was
  • Ryanair said about 3-4 days to get new plane.
other Ryanair flight was not cancelled - Ryanair choose which flight would cancelled.

So do you think I would not get any kind of compensation?

Be careful with that one. Ryanair is an Irish company and your flight from BCN to BUD neither departed from nor arrived in the UK. The courts of England and Wales may therefore lack jurisdiction over your claim. If you bring a claim in England and it is struck out for lack of jurisdiction, there is a possibility of having a costs order made against you.

Ryanair, as with some other airlines, do not reroute on other carriers. (and those that do tend to stick to airlines in the same alliance) You should have been given the option of waiting for the next flight with available seats and being provided with hotel, meals etc during the delay or receiving a refund (their flight on the 21st was also cancelled and they do not have a flight on the 22nd so 23rd was the next flight)

or taking a refund and organising your own way back...either seeing if there were any seats on the WizzAir flight on the 21st or trying another airport

What flights were ultimately cancelled would be based on what alternatives there were possibly available to avoid French air space and capacity on the alternate routes. I can see 76 cancellations from BCN on the 20th, 23 were Ryanair flights and the other 53 were a mixture of other airlines
The fact that some Ryanair flights were able to operate does not make your flight due compensation

What did you ultimately end up doing? are you looking for reimbursement for expenses? have you spoken to your travel insurance?

I would expect a very straight forward rejection for any EU261 compensation. The ATC strike was not in the control of Ryanair

Hi, I was affected by the French ATC strike when our flight from Malaga to Dublin was cancelled at the last minute (20th March).

After a very lengthy queuing process we were rebooked on the following Tuesday ex Malaga to Dublin, provided with a taxi and two nights at a very nice hotel in Malaga city. Provided with vouchers for food and lots of bottles of water whilst in the queue.

No compensation as the t+cs of airline cancellation policy stated that ATC issues were not covered with compensation.

Have to say Ryanair were very good that night. They had to cope with multiple flight cancellations on many routes out of Malaga. We were very tired having queued for a few hours, but got sorted in the end.

We could I suppose claim for meals during the two day delay, but the food is so inexpensive in Spain I wouldn't bother putting myself through all the hassle for a few quid really. The important point is that RYR looked after the necessities, gave us a great hotel, and got us home!

Just to mention that RYR are not always the baddies, and the ATC strike was outside of their control really.
