Flightstats shows your flight arrived 13 minutes later at 3.43pm than the scheduled arrival 3.30pm. Flightstats isn't 100% accurate. But it does show a 30 minute delay on runway departure.
Who flew which flight is relevant. BA got you to Chicago almost on time (according to Flightstats) but you missed your connection with an AA flight. A non EU carrier flying out of a non-EU airport, so reg 261/2004 doesn't apply. Its proving to a judge that yours was a single ticket/single flight (booked thru BA?) to qualify for your overall delyed arrival.
In court some have one, some have lost on this point. If your BA flight had arrived 3-4 hours later you would have been eligible. If your next flight had been on BA, you would have been eligible.b
Your AA flight - 3374? didn't depart until 5.05pm so not sure why you didn't make the connection?

Here is a link to a similar, but none precedent setting, case which the claimant won against BA. It involves a return journey from the US of A but the principals seem to be very similar.

I have read Vaubans guide and will pursue a claim with BA for a delayed flight [Heathrow to Cape Town on 29 March] in addition to the one I have already submitted to them for temporarily lost baggage.
I have also discussed the situation with the company with whom I took out travel insurance, but I assume they will not be involved if I receive compensation from BA?

That depends on the terms of your insurance and the nature of your claim. I suspect there is little or no overlap but I could be wrong.

Thanks, but I obviously can't claim compensation for the same items from both the airline and the insurance company. If BA pay me 600 Euros, plus the cost my replacement clothing, I don't think there's much I can claim from the insurance company.

If you have been compensated for lost items by the airline then, as you say, you have no loss to claim for that. However, the compensation due under the Regulation is probably different and you may be able to also claim for the delay on your travel insurance, although usually it's a modest amount which only kicks in after a protracted delay.

That was the one - and it wasn't the first time it's happened apparently!
