Skillens Statement Regarding Recent Online Competition

Skillens takes the fairness and legality of all its’ promotions extremely seriously and would like to apologise for the miscommunication which led Facebook followers to believe the winner of our recent competition was connected to the Skillens brand or family. We want to assure competition entrants, customers and followers that the winner was selected at random and does not and has never worked for Skillens and is in no way related to or connected personally to the family.

Skillens fully understands the frustration caused by this event. Skillens endeavours to ensure all promotions are fully compliant with the Advertising Standard Authorities rules both in their record keeping and in how promotions are conducted.

I would be interested to know that too.

However regarding the IPM would not hold out too much hope. I hope I get proved wrong but I doubt whether the IPM really have the powers of investigation to get to the bottom of the matter. They are as likely to be fobbed off by those official statements that keep appearing on the Skillens website as it would seem are most people who only take a passing interest in all this. I guess Skillens will be let off with a advisory notice telling them to take more care when running their competitions in future.

Out of interest does any one know if the IPM or ASA have dealt with any other Facebook competitions and what was the outcome?


I would have much preferred that someone would have passed on all those screen grabs and photos to the newspapers right from the outset.

( And regarding the photo of the winner and her husband I think it would have been better if the 'full' photo had been shown including the two staff presenting the ring and champagne because they are as much involved as the winner is.)

I know the newspapers come under flak from time to time for some of their methods but it is in events like these that they prove their worth.

My daughter came in earlier and asked if I was laughing or crying and I was laughing so much I couldn't explain so she stormed out in a huff!
