Food price hikes!!

Tesco have a database to assess the most popular and least popular products so prices go up on popular and down on unpopular to maximise revenue.
Boycott them!!
probably bang on right, prices are very unstable.
Every week prices change on my shopping (and I dont order much).
I used to work for a food company who supplied the supermarkets. During my time of employment which was over about 6 years there was various price adjustments, some were down to ourselves (product changes, promotions). But there was a 24 month period where things were stable and no changes at all to what the retailers were paying us, however during that time I still observed the retail prices jumping about. the markup between all parts of the wholesale to consumer chain was also frightening. The cost of producing the product I believe at the time was about 10% of the final retail price (including staffing). When I left the company changes were happening that would bring manning down a lot (so reducing costs) but I see now some years later the product is more expensive than ever.0 -
I have also noticed some ridiculous price increases over the last few months.
smoked salmon trimmings went from £0.98 to £1.50 overnight. Still less than a pound in ASDA and Sainsbos
organic eggs (10) just went up from £3.05 to £3.20 and we eat A LOT of eggs..
organic beef steak mince used to be on offer 3 for £10 for as long as I can remember but that is no longer the case, same goes for organic lamb mince
on the other hand Tesco have been giving out £5 off your next shop vouchers quite a bit recently which may explain the absence of so many offers. They are also quite good when it comes to handling complaints and since our shopping has been late and there have been some mispricing issues recently our voucher total for the last 6 weeks is somewhere around £25
Since we also have an active delivery saver (half price) at the moment we have been ordering from Tesco regularly but as soon as this runs out I will be getting my shopping from several shops to get the best price0 -
Anyone else find that Tesco are putting up the price on a lot of their products? Last week their own brand tuna was £3.99 for a pack of 4, today it's £4.50. Until recently their own brand tinned soups were 50p each, now they've gone up to 65p. Their frozen farmhouse mixed vegetables used to be £1.20 and they've crept up to £1.70. Brioche rolls that were 99p are suddenly £1.20. Etc.
There are loads of substantial price increases like this. As someone on a limited income and who has to do most of their shopping online it's becoming increasingly difficult to manage my food budget.0 -
Oh my god, don't get me started!!! I got 2 packets of chicken for sandwiches etc last week - £2.20 each or 2 for £4
Went to get them this week - £3 each of 2 for £5
In a week!! 80p!! That's 36%!! (Help me, I'm turning into my mother :rotfl: )Broke Student :beer:0 -
I'll say it again, because it's worth repeating....
Aldi and Lidl are both cheaper than the big supermarkets and have more stable prices than them.0 -
Prices are never constant.0

I was going to splutter about Muller yoghurts - but then discovered that it is just that they have now shrunk the packet size to reflect a long ago shrinking of the weight. (Of course they maintained the same price point then - but the physical shrinking of the packet has not coincided with a new shrinking of content.)0

True, but I have been shopping at Aldi & Lidl for about 2 years now, and I can think of many/most products that have been the same price over all of that time (barring special offers, when they were cheaper).
The point remains that if you are concerned about price-hikes, you are shopping in the wrong place.0 -
Shhh, don't tell everybody, the stores are busy enough already!Cornucopia wrote: »True, but I have been shopping at Aldi & Lidl for about 2 years now, and I can think of many/most products that have been the same price over all of that time (barring special offers, when they were cheaper).Stompa0 -
