And Aldi figures are up 30% and Lidl up 12% - people are swapping, and they are swapping from somewhere.

I think more and more people are doing what I do which is shopping in Lidl/Aldi for all the basics and just doing a top up in big SMs for a few brands they haven't yet given up on. I can tell from the cars in the car park.;) Lidl/Aldi have the bonus that they actually do offers (Super 6) on good, healthy food whereas places like Tesco and Asda do offers on junk.

Personally, I think both Aldi and Lidl have achieved some sort of cult status. Having tried both, several times, I've been far from impressed but people are sick to death of the majors and get a thrill out of the "ooh, that looks a bit like a McVities digestive label" experience..

There is a knack to shopping at Lidl/Aldi, and if you are used to the Big 4, the experience is different.

The knack is, essentially, being prepared to try things. Once you've found a product line that suits you, don't be disappointed if it disappears.
  • When I was young, some 50 years ago, I remember going to the local shops on Saturday with my father to get the weekend food supplies, when passing the local then supermarket!! Big shop, still a well known large player these days, he said that shop there son increases the ticket prices on a Saturday morning, I caught them doing it, so people who know don't go there on a Saturday. 50 years ago these tactics were being used to lure people into buying bulk deals. Perhaps those of us who know this about our local supermarkets should adopt the same rule, don't go there on a Saturday!!

Has anyone else noticed the recent hike in egg prices?

It''s hard to see why, given the fact that chickens lay more freely during the summer months and there has been no sudden rise in the cost of keeping poultry (I should add, Mrs Badger and I keep chickens, so that isn't a guess about the costs).

Nope - 6 large free range eggs are still £1.05 at Aldi.

    Hi everyone

Has anyone noticed the price increase on yeast??

I buy it regularly, i am just doing my food budget for next month and checked on Mr S website to see their own brand and Hovis is now a £1 for fast action yeast.

I swear when I got my bread maker at the beginning of 2011 it was around the 60p mark and when I last bought it it was 85p.

    Does anyone know why??

Can anyone confirm the price increase? I am off to find my receipts!!

I will have to work out how much it costs me to make my own bread.

    Thanks

They need to make up the profits from wherever.
Noticed skimmed milk powder has gone up 40%.

I noticed the Doves Farm orange packet was up to £1.15 in Waitrose this week (I'd seen it on Abel & Cole for that price and thought it was expensive but turns out is now same price in supermarket). Had been 99p for ages.
