I remember a few months ago the basics pasta jumped from 25p up to 39p or 40p in the space of a week. I also remember a couple of years ago when their basics tuna used to be 45p a tin, it's now 75p a tin.

The couple of pence here and there doesn't worry me, but when the price of an item almost doubles overnight that's a bit concerning, it all adds up pretty quickly.

Jesus, I can't believe some of you are whinging on about price "jumps" of a staggering 2p. Get a grip....

It may only a couple of pence on an item but it's often more and if it happens on a lot of the items you buy, over the whole shop it adds up to a significant amount.

What may be a small increase to some people it can be a high increase to others, especially if mostly reliant on the basics/value items so something else has to be done without to take into account the difference - a loaf of bread or a pint of milk for example.

Going back to tea bags, Poundstretcher sometimes do 300 Ty-phoo One Cup bags for just £2.79. They're also in 6 sealed foil tubes inside, so will keep when you open the box.

I always thought that, if you sell more of an item, you can afford to sell it for less, and still remain profitable and become more competitive.

Zen. Percentages. If, for example, ASDA SmartPrice batter mix was to go up from 7p by 2p to 9p ...
If you fold it in half, will an Audi A4 fit in a Citroen C5? :)

Maybe Tesco doesn't sell as much of the value stuff as MiSErs believe. I can't believe they flog a lot of organic either. So to me it seems like their mass market is the brand buying pile the trolley high types and that's where their profits are.

If you look at the website probably 75% of the offers are on processed stuff like the Sunny Delight, Muller Light yogurts. big bags of Walkers crisps etc and not on meat, poultry, fish and veg.
  • Was shocked today - Alpro soy milk was £1 at Co-Op up till last week; went in today, and it's now at £1.60! A 60% price increase overnight

The only reason I went in Co-Op was because soy milk was cheaper than other supermarkets (which tend to do it between £1.20-1.40). Oh well, I shall have to hunt elsewhere. :T

Frozen veg gone up AGAIN! In the past 6 months the price has increased by 50% (£1.00 to £1.50 per bag). I get through so much of this stuff and will end up having to eat less as a result, not what I would have opted to do.

Like I said a few pages back, what started as a reasonable and intelligent thread has turned into "OMG price gone up scam scam scam!"

Sainsbury's lemon sorbet and raspberry sorbet, about 6 weeks ago was £1.99 for 500ml, then it suddenly jumped to £2.30 until last week and is now £2.50! They are quickly catching up with Waitrose's own brand sorbets

dasophster I reckon Sainsbury's is trying to capture Waitrose customers. I've seen a big increase in the number of organic products in my local branch for example.

It makes sense I guess. If you're in a recession, the poorer customers will be spending less not more and more of your customers generally will be spending less. So if you tempt enough people used to Waitrose and Ocado prices you may make more money hence sorbets and organic.
