It's not just the act of delivery tho, it's the whole picking and packing process too so yes there is a subsidy element. http://www.thisismoney.co.uk/money/bills/article-2204908/Delivery-fee-online-groceries-hit-15-Experts-warning-shoppers.html
Tesco has been scalping in January for several years, IMO they profiteer simply because they can. Maybe they think we are all half asleep after the excesses of December and with seasonal vitamin D deficiency. They are probably right to be fair.
Doesn't anyone else deliver in your area, Asda or Sainsbury? Up to Xmas I was switching back and forth between two supermarkets to take advantage of the best offers and get my favourite products. You can use Mysupermarket but I tend to have two tabs open and cross check prices.
I guess I may save a bit trying one of the other big 3 but I wont get the big savings from aldi which sucks
The problem when I used to use asda was the dates on the food were aweful, often same day as delivery or one day later. It was defentily cheaper than tesco but I had to throw a lot away.
When my sister does my food shopping for me its way cheaper, eg. co-op some people see as expensive but when she did my weekly shop for me there I got so much more food for my money than tesco, but she wont do it for me on a regular basis of course as its a lot of effort for her.
I actually know someone who works for tesco as a driver and if we assume average delivery fee per customer £4 he does about 5-10 deliveries per hour. If we assume only 5 and its a 16 hour delivery day then thats per van (as is many vans in any given area) then £80 per day per van. Pays for one order picker and fuel for the van. Then add the bonus tesco manage to sell the food that doesnt sell well in the store by removing the best stuff of the website I am not so sure about the cross subsidy. More likely tesco costs more simply because they abusing their market power. They defenitly wont need one order picker per van so obviously the maths will be more favourable then that across all vans.0 -
I notice Tesco has seen fit to raise the price of its chicken thighs and drums from 3.50 odd to 5.00 since the horsemeat scandal. I make that a rise of about 50%.
Not that they would cash in or anything.

Their behaviour on pricing is scurrilous and contrasts neatly with their logo "Every Little Helps".....how meaningless!
How do we know there's no horsemeat in their chicken pieces?:D0 -

Asda are supposed to pick products with longer dates, if they don't you request a refund by logging in to your order and ticking a few boxes. You don't even have to spend time and money on the telephone, I much prefer the system to Tesco.
They claim
"It couldn’t be fresher if you went to the supermarket yourself. Our pickers will pick your shopping as if it were their own. That means they will always be searching for the best quality, freshness and date codes available."

For some veg you can freeze or make soup if it's short dated, meat can also be frozen. It's also worth reading up on storing short dated veggies so they last longer. I will eat many things past the use by date as long as they look and smell fine, not chicken or prawns obviously. If the food is free it's not the end of the world if a few bits are given to a neighbour or thrown away.Declutterbug-in-progress.⭐️⭐️⭐️ ⭐️⭐️0 -

Are they? Value frozen chicken portions £1.75 a kilo, Value fresh chicken leg quarters £2.35 a kilo, Value fresh thighs and drumsticks £2.70 a kilo at present.
The regular fresh thighs and drumsticks are £4.70 a kilo but on offer BOGO half price until April, so I'm guessing the hike has nothing to do with horsemeat and everything to do with having to sell a product at a higher price before an offer is legal.Declutterbug-in-progress.⭐️⭐️⭐️ ⭐️⭐️0 -

Asda have always had the ability to get refund however thats not really a solution, if I reject half the order and get it refunded I am then in a position of been short on food and having to reorder sooner than normal and of course means more delivery charges and inconveniance, there is value in the supermarket getting it right first time.0 -

Agreed: but if you rejected more than a couple of items I'd complain on the telephone or by e-mail and get a free delivery at the very least. That still means you are quids in because you have free veg to make soup with, free fruit to stew.Declutterbug-in-progress.⭐️⭐️⭐️ ⭐️⭐️0 -
