An odd thing's happened around here over the last few months after a nice new Aldi opened right next door to a scruffy, tired old Tesco store.

Tesco sought and was given planning permission to replace the tired old store, but then changed their minds - decided to use the money somewhere else.

Some people initially thought Aldi was a bit downmarket (some still do, to be fair) but over the months, that all changed. Aldi has all the smart cars in their car park now, and the old bangers are next door in Tesco. Tesco's now the downmarket 'poor relative'. Aldi's busy, and the Tesco (which used to be packed) is now much, much quieter.

A classic example, really, of Tesco mismanagement. They assumed the customers would keep coming, even to a scruffy old store. But they didn't - and the really funny thing is that the it's the high-spending upmarket Tesco Finest customers that have defected in the greatest numbers! :rotfl:

  • Tesco have been doing this with items across the board. A packet of their own value brand wet wipes was 20p for a pack of 80 now 61p for 72 wipes (although the price has been hiked up throughout the year).

I've noticed lots of their own, not necessarily value brand has increased in price and reduced by weight. Top brands are up to the same thing as well as I am sure many other supermarkets are. I think they rely on the fact most of their customers just plonk items in their trolly without checking price and weight!

  • Just went to add something to my tesco order (which i am only making as I have £10 off) and saw the 100g walnut halves I had in my basket at the weekend for £1 has now gone up to £1.39! I have of course removed them from my basket and wont be buying them at that price from tesco. How can they justify adding 39p in one go to what is just a small item.

Of course all the major supermarkets are at it but tesco are the worst.
Have they forgotten the main reason they got so big in the first place was that they undercut their competitors? Now they appear to be intent on going backwards by 'overcutting'. There is someone high up in Tesco's management who is being paid a fortune to put them back on track but is blowing it big time by succumbing to greed.
I just hope the other supermarkets are watching this company committing Hari Kari so that they learn from it or they'll find the likes of Aldi and Lidl continue their relentless rise.

I work at Tesco, but unless there is a particularly good offer on something I need, I rarely shop there, even with Staff Discount it's usually more expensive than other retailers.

Let's teach Tesco a lesson and boycott their stores until they realize they can't seduce us with high prices.
Also......the whole process involved with 1/2 price items,50% off which is a gimmick to try to make you believe you're getting a good deal is so hackneyed and simplistic especially when you realize that items like....cheese,which is always on offer at 50% off....is now £2.46 v £2.25 no more than 2 months ago!
They are taking the mick and need teaching a lesson.
    Off to Lidl now......
