  • Hi Spangle.aka

You were right, it was the first thread that came up on the google search. We're looking at buying a house which has got a asbestos shed and the garage has an asbestos roof and one side is asbestos, so was just trying to find out whether it would be worth buying the house. Looks like it will :j

    Thank you very much!:T
  • I think LL Jacks works for an asbestos removal firm?

My advice use common sense in the 40's everyone had it in homes, schools brake pads etc. 1 in 100 is a lot... but only !% and if your not working on it everyday although still a risk considerably less.

    1 wet it.
2 Disturb it as little as possible (don't smash up panels)
3 wear clothes you can throw away
4 Double bag it, tape it up and take to the tip.

Its also worth buying a mask I think its a ppf3. They sell them at screwfix (check with them that is the right grade) you can check with them. Please be aware that a mask will only stop around 90% of the particles though.

I did mine myself a few years back. I won't know for a while yet if I'm going to have side effects. But the company I contacted wanted £2000 (that's more than 10% of my yearly pay) to remove it. I did it in one day. I used bolt cutters and removed the framework rather than attacking the panels.
  • There is a common misconception that only a licensed removal agency or local authority can remove your tired asbestos garage. The Environment Agency will grant a license to a company to become a bonafide upper tier waste carrier. Even so, the company still has to have a means of legitimately disposing of the waste preferably an account with the large landfill organisation. Needless to say, checking the credentials of the company including their license number is a must.
  • I feel I have to say something here, this one fibre kills you stuff  , IS nonsense, if that was the case we'd all be dead years ago, I've read the average human breathed 100,000 fibres a year of the stuff, witch make sense, ALL vehicles to a very short time ago, ALL had asbestos brake's and clutches, I can guarantee just about all of us would have been exposed at one time or another, NOT that I am underplaying any risk here, and you should take sensible precautions working with ANY hazards material.:)
