Im not really sure where to post this
We need to get rid of our asbestos garage, how do we go about doing this? my Dad tells me its not the bad asbestos (think he mentioned its white?)
Do we HAVE to get the professionals in our could we do it ourselves and take it to the tip?
Anyone know the costs associated?
Also has anyone had there garden done by gardeners? if i could be extremly cheeky could i ask what you have had done and at what price?

I know you cant take it to the skip it has to be bagged and collected by the council or the council will tell you where to take it. If you ring the council they are very good with advice. My council provide the bags for removal and will charge you to come and take it away.
You can do it yourself i think, just get some advice! you need all the safety gear masks etc and you have to keep it wet.0 -
All asbestos is bad asbestos!
common mistake to think that blue is the bad stuff and white and brown aren't bad for you, they will all cause severe disease and unpleasant death - no joke!
I personally wouldn't risk taking it down myself and a specialist contracotr is expensive, but what value do you put on your health?
I used to work for a firm who tested for asbestos and the training films I saw would give you nightmares.
If you'er contemplating doing this then yes it does have to kept wet while you're working on it and you should have personal protective equipment from a hire shop. The main thing would be to keep the panels as undisturbed as possible because the fibres will escape into the air where there are any breaks or crumbling bits. You'll be at less risk in the open air but remember that one microscopic fibre can cause mesothelioma.
Sorry to be a doom-sayer here, I'm not claiming to be an expert, just passing on what I learned a few years ago.Just call me Nodwah the thread killer0 -
Thanks nodwah!
I appreciate your reply, i'll ring the council and go from there.0 -
Yes best get some expert advice, its not worth risking your health. Hope the damage isn't too much0

we recently got our asbestos garage roof removed. Phone house insurance company and they sent out the contractors 2 weeks later! They replaced the roof aswell.
Ring your house insurance company!!0 -
Our local tip has a specific skip set aside for asbestos.
I think you have to ask for bags from them.
Collect the bags first, Dismantle the garage carefully, use a water spray to keep down dust.
If you wear proper safety gear it shouldn't be much of a problem. You can get those throwaway overalls and a mask.
If there was major concerns over the public dismantling their garages, the councils wouldn't provide skips. They would insist on proffessional removal teams.
That's not to say asbestos is not dangerous.....the 'safe stuff' is manageable.

So what did you say? we actually want rid of the garage all together to make a garden so its not a case of replacing it0 -
well if the whole garage is asbestos then they may be able to remove it all for you, and then its just a case of getting a landscaper to do the garden for you............ No harm in ringing the house insurance people to see.........0

Having been involved in a large refurbishment for a council building I can say that each council has a department which can give you valuable advice. Its worth contacting them as they are usually very helpfull. For any clean up of small asbestos peices that need to go to the council disposal unit they will advise it be DOUBLE BAGGED!0

I find this amazing. What insurance company are you with?
I'm amazed they didn't just say "Oh no you knew about the asbestos when you took out the policy with us so we're not responsible." After all an asbestos garage isn't very easy to overlook.
I'd love to know more details of how you managed this as our garage has got as asbestos roof that I'd love to get rid of. When we bought the house the surveyor said it was "asbestos cement" which is apparently not considered a danger unless it starts to break up.0
