I use my garage to work out in, to save money instead of going to the gym, it is in good condition and non of the panels are damaged, am i at risk?
  • This thread is actually more suited to the "In my home" board, so I'll move it across there now.
Hi, Martin’s asked me to post this in these circumstances: I’ve asked Board Guides to move threads if they’ll receive a better response elsewhere(please see this rule) so this post/thread has been moved to another board, where it should get more replies. I eat asbestos as part of my daily diet and it ain't done me no harm! The baldness and jaundice ain't linked! :D

Wanna do my garage this summer but I've got no real qualms about doing it! There are thousands of people of were exposed to it daily and not affected! Besides, life would be dull if we didn't take risks every now and then eh? ;) :rotfl:

Maybe it would be interesting to see if in a few years time if after ripping down his asbestos garage and he’s drowning in his own lung fluid, which the hospital can’t pump out quicker than it’s formed, see if he’ thinks the risk was worth it?
  • We have an asbestos garage and I have been nagging my dad for ages saying that it needs to be got rid of as it is a health risk / devalues the property. According to him it is better to be able to say (when selling, which we have no intention of doing) that we have a garage made of asbestos which is falling down, covered in cobwebs and very insecure than to have no garage *head desk*

Will show him this thread, thanks.

Let me try to understand this clearly.

We bought a property last year that has a brick built shed with a corrugated asbestos roof (mentioned on the Homebuyer's Report).

Can I now simply go to my buildings insurance company and claim for the roof's replacement ? On what basis ?

Aside from who pays, any idea of cost for this specialist job ? I'm also thinking of the insurance excess here, which may be quite large...

People seem to be getting a bit carried away here, its a long term exposure risk, inhale asbestos dust for 10-20 years + on a daily basis and you will have a problem. A one off exposure shouldnt be harmfull.

Is there any way of recognising Asbestos? We have a very old garden shed at the end of our garden that needs removing. How can I tell if the roof is made from asbestos? Are there experts you can get in?

    This is quite informative-

You can get it tested to be sure. There are many firms that offer tests to see if it is asbestos or not.

It takes ONE fibre, my dad died aged 52 of Mesothelioma, and within 12 weeks of being told he had this dreadfull disease. When you have been with a loved one on a daily basis with this disease and watch them die a very painful death you don`t and should not take it lightly.

Sorry for rant but please don`t mess with it what ever the colour/condition.

I'll be taking my garage roof down in the summer, ready to have a new garage built.

I phoned my insurers and after quite a battle over the phone ("insurance isn't a maintenance contract you know" etc), someone should be coming round soon for a look.

There's only a small bit of damage (and it doesn't look recent), but as it's asbestos I'd like it checked, even if I'm told that it isn't covered but should be replaced. If it wasn't asbestos, I'd not be bothered at all.
