This is a common myth. Mesothelioma can be caused by ONE fibre. Asbestosis - a chronic, debilitating condition which also kills people is more often found in people who have had long term high level exposures.

Toiletduck People seem to be getting a bit carried away here, its a long term exposure risk, inhale asbestos dust for 10-20 years + on a daily basis and you will have a problem. A one off exposure shouldnt be harmfull.

This isn't true. Please see my previous post. One fibre inhaled can kill you - you'll have no way of knowing and in 20+ years time you'll risk being diagnosed with Mesothelioma. It's an horrific death and with the government not funding any research into it even in 60 years time everyone diagnosed with Meso will still face a death sentence.

More people die of Mesothelioma and other asbestos disease in the Uk every year than die in road traffic accidents (5000+).

One in EVERY 100 men born in the 1940's will die from Mesothelioma.

One person dies from Mesothelioma in the UK every 5 hours.

Please DON'T read information about the dangers of AAsbestos from the asbestos watchdog website - it's a pro asbestos website from sellers of asbestos who want to save money but don't care about others lives - they should remember that Mesothelioma doesn't discriminate against white collar workers.

The surveyor came round to me and said there was nothing to worry about as it isn't the 'powdery' asbestos. It doesn't need removing at all, I was told.

Hi was hoping someone might be able to help. My neighbours garage is basically in my garden (it used to be part of my property but was sold off many years ago)... anyway they have an asbestos roof which is damaged and it worries me because I have a little boy who likes playing outside and keeping him away from the garage area is really difficult. The neighbours seem disinterested. I have heard horror stories of how bad asbestos is. Is there anything I can do to make the neighbours repair the roof? So my little boy can play safely. Many thanks for your help. X

There's a load of spam in this thread, but I don't suppose anyone has paid to have an asbestos garage roof removed recently and is prepared to share a ball-park cost? My mother has one that's leaking and I would rather get it out before the joists start to rot and it begins to collapse.

    Thanks.

Sorry to drag up an old thread, but I was amazed at some insurers being so helpful.

After the recent Scottish hurricane, our asbestos garage has lost three roof panels (one ended up in my neighbours garden, the other on our garden path), the rest of the panels are coming away, the frame is now warped so the window glasses have cracked, the door mechanism is away from the frame, and the main roof strut is separating.

They sent a surveyor, who didn't bother to tell me he was here (he said he had rang, but I had the phone with me all morning and nobody phoned). Anyway he'd taken pictures but didn't show them to me (then again, he didn't ask to see mine), and said that "High winds had shown up the poor condition of the garage", and he was going to refuse the claim.

    High winds ?
The guy along the road had to replace all his ridge tiles, there were trampolines flying about etc, etc.

Maybe I need a better insurance company ?
  • Just so there is an up to date answer on this thread.

We've just been quoted £400 to remove and dispose of our double garage roof by a licensed contractor recommended on our local council web site.
  • wow thanks for that however it would have been better on a new thread & not one that is 5 1/2 yrs old as i'm guessing the OP may have sorted it by now
I'm only here while I wait for Corrie to start.

You get no BS from me & if I think you are wrong I WILL tell you.
  • I replied to the orignal thread as it was one of the top google answers when searching Asbestos garage roofs. I thought it would help other people researching the same problem.
