  • mysk_girl that bunting is fab. I haven't crocheted in years - think I'll have to have a little refresher lesson & have a go at that.
mum2one I love the idea of IOUs on the wreath, my daughter would really appreciate that if it was days out and spending time with each other.
I made some really quick bunting for a few teenagers at Christmas (because I decided on it last minute) but they're a good back up if something doesn't work out because it really doesn't take that long. I can't post a photo because I'm new but all you need are pinking shears, fabric, ribbon & a sewing machine!
For smaller children I made aprons & bought diamante iron transfers to make them personal & gave a jar of DIY cookies to go with them.

This is the pattern I used for the triangles, note it is in US terms - what she calls a double crochet (dc) I would call a treble crochet. I used DK yarn and a 3.5mm hook. The link across the top is half treble into each ch of the pennant, with the cord formed from foundation double crochet (fdc) - I used the foundation single crochet (US terms!) by crochet geek on YouTube to learn this. Am pleased with the final result, it worked up really quickly.

I've been meaning to say for past couple of days I love your makes mysk :) they're lovely, your friends / family are very lucky!

I'm on with my owl bag but it's taking a while at the mo, I'm having to hand stitch around the wings as my sewing machine is refusing to play nicely and won't zig-zag! Tried bringing it to work but as I work in a very male environment it caused too much of a stir to see me sitting at my desk sewing away, & tbh I can't be bothered with the attention right now haha. Need to get cracking though - It's her birthday on Sunday

I really love your ideas on here. Your creativity is great! I need to cut down spending on presents and make them more personal. My first challenge is to put together some gifts for my brother in America. I was thinking of sending him hugs from my kids like this:

and doing a Tagxedo wall art for him. I may try to knit something for him too, maybe this:

Next challenge after that is my niece's birthday, 11, also in America. Perhaps a notebook with a patchwork cover? She is my goddaughter too and very special to me, I would like to give her something lovely. They have all had a tough year.

I have been trying to find a cheats method of patchwork which is self lined (as you go) online- no such luck. Kirsty Allsop did it on her TV programme a couple of years ago!
    So I'll try to explain.
You cut a backing piece- maybe slightly larger than needed. Start on the left with your first strip of patches. Sew all round very close to edge. Lay 2nd strip face down with RHside edges matching. Sew normal seam width. Open out strip 2 and flatten. Lay 3rd strip on 2nd right side tog as before and sew. proceed across the fabric in this way. Brilliant! no seams showing! I have just made a patchwork stocking this way with the shape cut out in sheeting. Quick, easy, effective. You could add hand or machine embroidery, embellishments etc

here's another idea here (but I'm not keen on the raw look edges)

I think I get it, need to sit down with some fabric so that I can work it out. Thank you! I have seen a felt pencil roll too, just pairs of slits cut for each pencil to fit through with a ribbon to tie it up - perhaps I could appliqu! it with similar fabric? Will try to find a photo of what I mean...

You could make an applique piece of fabric slightly larger to go on the outside, then fold in the raw edges all round- like a quilt edge/ picture frame. Or another layer of contrasting felt with applique- could then be the same size as no edges to fray

Ha! I've found the quick quilting method online- finally! They call it "Quilt as you go". This is using straightforward fabric strips, I made patchwork strips but mine was a much smaller project.
