You're absolutely right in that I need a Plan B. I've already reduced the price on them but if they don't sell at this price I'll reduce them a bit more. We need to replace them with a dining set that's a bit smaller and as money is tight I can't really afford to let them go for nothing. :( Storage isn't really an option as can't afford that. I've asked around to see if anybody we know wants them but nobody needs a dining set.
TBH I only threw storage in there to get across that they could end up costing you money inthe long run

Soooo a new set will cost you more than you get for these 2nd hand...yes? So how about seeing if a local carpenter/caninetmaker could adapt the exisitng ones so they are smaller and a better fit for your house? Eg I use half my oval drop leaf table so it could actually be cut in half and finished off to sit snug against the wall and take up less space than a smaller oval. It could be cheaper than making not much on these and then paying out for new
(Very much thinking outside the box here so forgive me if I exasperate you!)

No need to apologise, it's nice to have someone to bounce ideas off - husband just looks at me blankly if I even mention it. Lack of imagination, that one :p

Yes a new one will cost more, prices for new furniture of any decent standard seem quite expensive in comparison to second hand models. I'll probably look for another second hand set. Adapting the set isn't really an option, it's just not really made that way. :(

At a bit of a loss with what to do if we can't sell it to be honest. Any more suggestions very welcome! :D

Turn it upside down and use as a boat (well that's what we did as kids!)

  • Hello to everyone, I'm new to this thread but used to hang out on the forum a couple of years ago on the Amazon and Weight Loss threads.

I've been inspired by the Flylady's 40 days and 40 nights decluttering for Lent - beats giving up chocolate :p I'm on about day 22. Poor OH is getting well known at the CS.

Hello to BB (if you remember me lol)

Not got much further with the de hoarding and have been bringing things into the house :(. Last weekend was off work and we went shopping and bought eldest dd some stuff as she needed a few new clothes, told the other 2 they would get some bits the next two months (although they don't really need much they felt hard done to coz eldest got all the stuff) but then I felt sorry for them and bought them a couple of bits from Mr A anyway. Then youngest grew out her school shoes so bought new ones and eldest has grown out of her Wellies so I have new ones coming but this probably means she is going into next size up which may mean she will need other bits of footwear also. I have got a bit better at recognising what needs to go and the non fitting school shoes are on the cash for clothes pile along with some other bits I've come across in the ironing and also Dora duvet cover which middle dd has decided she is too old for. I have still been fitting illness all week nd feel extremely worn out, middle dd has had a sick bug too and youngest has been an absolute nightmare with her behaviour today. I could do with going to my bed right now and I'm honestly not entirely sure I'm going to make it to work tomorrow!

Poor you, days when folks are ill just need to be accepted as non-dehoarding days. You will still make overall progress in the long term.

I temporarily fixed my son's school shoes last night. Proud of myself, especially because I could actually find the superglue. Unfortunately I managed to squirt a stream of it across my pjs but it is okay.

My great week even ended without any disappointment/things going wrong. May this be the start of a much brighter future.

I am sorry to say that your eBay buyers are just as likely to be hoarders or compulsive buyers as anyone who buys things in a csor a shop - you need to have a when it's gone it's gone attitude and allow yourself to not think about who why or where your item will end up and just get it out in the quickest easiest way (or the most profitable if needs be)

I know a man who started off e-buying one particular type of pot, enjoyed the buzz, now can't move for them. Yes he loves them, and cherishes the idea of them, but look after them? no, he is tripping over them now and they are geting neglected and damaged. There have been posters on here who can't stop buying clothes that actually don't really fit them when they get them delivered but still go on until they recognise the spiral of hoarding - things on eBay can be just as aspirational as anywhere else, and much easier to buy with a couple of clicks

I was on a charity stall for the last two weekends and I recognised fellow hoarders in many of the older ladies who told me tales of what would be just right for which grandchild - starting off believable when they bought the 1st item but then not even caring when I tried to put them off the broken items, I thought uh-hoh ..

Anyone new to this thread, there was a v good radio show by Kevin McCloud in 2011 about the difference between the buzz from crafting/creating items to the buzz from shopping - the creativity buzz is sustainable whereas the "retail therapy" buzz does not satisfy the right part of the brain and is therefore insatiable - may still be on the net somewhere, it's v good

Once my item in as been eBayed and is out of the door, I do have a when it's gone, it's gone attitude - I never think of the item again.

However, thinking it's going to a good home makes it easier to wave goodbye.
