Thanks for all the feedback - appreciate the budget can get me a lot, of course I don't need to spend it all :)

I suspect the offers for the dates I'm going aren't all there yet, so I'm willing to wait a while to see what comes up, but an initial look has...

MGM grand - $306 although its a petite king so not interested...
Mirage is $308 for a double king...
Ti is $253 for a deluxe room...337 if I want a strip view...

Must admit the ti looks good value and reviews seem reasonable...although the price doesn't include those annoying $28 a night resort fees...

Question is do I hold off or get booking at these rates...

A quick look at lowcostusa.co.uk shows Paris rooms from £226 total (I last stayed in 2003 so can't accurately comment) with optional resort fee.

Monte Carlo £276 total (stayed last year and thought it OK - caveat is that we split time with Cosmopolitan which we love which is why MC didn't seem as nice to us. Nothing wrong with it however) this includes resort fee.

TI starts at £301 with optional resort fee

EDIT - just realised that my search was 28th for 5 nights but your original post states Sun - Fri which is 27th for 5 nights.

That make TI start at £276
    MC at £248
    Paris £212

Is it worth starting to play myvegas on facebook now and hope that there are some comp rooms on the dates you're going?

if you book direct with the hotel you can normally cancel up to 72 hours before so if you see something that works for you then might be worth doing.

TI had a promo on that ends today I think - it was on their website...most bookings can be cancelled without penalty - occasionally one cannot.

72-hour sale was listed here with some others.

Think they now have small fridges in every room which is handy and not the norm...we like it there...rooms are comfortable, parking is handy (self-park or valet)...2x Starbucks on the premises...the bedding is quite nice we think...decent location.
Does remembering a time that a certain degree of personal responsibility was more or less standard means that I am officially old?

think the 72 hour sale works out to $450 including resort fee...so about the same GBP but with resort fee paid.

I think lowcostusa is normally really good for higher end hotels but starts to come more in line with the mid-range, etc...at least from what I have seen.

Must admit its currently the front run for me - seems to be consistently recommended...

As with most things it's down to individual choice and the risk/reward that individual associates with the options available.

For us earlier this year Cosmo on Lowcost was the way to go because it included resort fee. Potential risk was if something better came up in the meantime as I decided to pay in full to get the best rate available.

In this situation I personally would do what you suggested earlier - find something now with a view to cancelling nearer the time if a better offer appears.

completely agree and Cosmo is one that seems to be good value on lowcostusa - just that on the more mid-range hotels it seems like they aren't as competitive...higher end, they seem to beat most other options by quite a bit...not sure why that is...maybe they make a bit more on the mid-range so can discount higher end? Maybe...or maybe my experience isn't really enough to have a fair view.

Talking of cheaper places - has anyone (here) actually stayed at the Tuscany Suites (near the Plat) ?

Yes. We stayed there in May and are booked in there for most of our Oct/Nov/Dec trip. Tony loves the gym, there is a laundry, the pool area is nice, free WiFi in the public areas, a few restaurants and a casino with good drink service.

I think our time there averages out at $65/night, so very reasonable. We are there when a few of those big conventions are on too.

pebbles stayed there is May and we went for a reccy. Lovely place, nice grounds, big rooms with kitchenette and, of course most importantly, it had a laundry room.

12.5% cashback on Expedia is making it cheaper than the US sites I'm checking...
