Well I have been lurking for a while now but still trying to keep the need not want theory in mind. I have to say I am now making a big decision for me based on exactly that!

Last Friday my dog was taken ill. It was eventually found out he had been attacked by a bigger dog whilst at the dog sitters but that's a long story. Anyway he has been in critical care most of the week. He had to be resuscitated last Friday night! He is now on the mend and should be home on Monday :j

Thankfully he is insured but I have to pay the fees up front and reclaim them from my insurance! Not sure how vets get away with it? Imagine if car insurers and garages worked the same way? Anyway, I need to raise some funds and the solution is going to be to sell some jewellery. I have a few really high priced items which I really wanted to keep but, and here is the reality, I have had a necklace and bracelet sat in a box for about 9 years and worn them about 6 times. So much as I would like to keep them, I don't need them and they have to go. When I get the money back from the insurers I will use it to pay off some debt so that is another big plus! I don't think I could have brought myself to sell them just for debt clearing purposes :o

I was sorting through them tonight and my DS1 who is 7 was looking at them and was asking what I was doing. I explained I was going to sell them to pay the vet so we could have our dog back. Bless him, he said but they are beautiful, please keep them. He then asked me if I wore them and I explained I had but not very often and much as I loved them our dog was more important and I didn't really need to keep them. He seemed happy so off to the jewellers on Saturday morning :o

    That's a great story

I'm going to sign up for vet school immediately

    Afternoon all.

Had a really tight week but managed on just over £35 for food and fags!

Not too sure about mooncups and the like but aldi's version of lillets are sooo much cheaper and great. Also been using their baking marge instead of butter. The price of butter is phenomenal.

Cupboards are looking a little bare so need to build up a bit of a reserve again.

Sold a couple more bits on ebay with money from sales going straight to CC.

Only want this week (apart from the baccy that is!) has been a small pot of daffodil bulbs for a £1. Will put a smile on my face for a week or two so worth every penny.

    Hope everyone's enjoying the sunshine.

  • My £10 challenge is going alright, but I had to pay to post an e bay sale (technically doesn't count, but has eaten from my purse). I needed to go food shopping earlier, but that money is kept in a separate purse altogether.

I don't have any needs this week really, but feel like I'll probably spend money to entertain myself! I'm trying to have a frugal Feb, so I've been entertaining myself by listing things on e bay, and dying clothes (and myself) that I bought ages ago, but have never worn because the colour doesn't suit me. How else do you all keep busy and get out the house for free?

I've been reading about the moodcup and I'm not squeamish, its just I dont quite know if it would work for me. They look awfully uncomfortable.

So, at the risk of asking for too much information....how does the cup work for you?

I discovered Mooncup as a result of reading a thread on MSE. I have never looked back. My only regret? That I didn't discover these YEARS ago! Mine is the "you have had children" larger one. Bought it on Clubcard points from Boots. It took a few goes before I got the hang of it but although I have had the odd leak where it hasn't been positioned correctly, it's nothing a very thin pantyliner can't catch.

I'm saving LOADS and feeling better knowing I'm not clogging up landfill with tampons. I'm NOT a treehugger and didn't get a mooncup primarily because of the environmental implications but it's a nice bonus.

As to whether or not I can feel it, I'm wearing it right now and I can't feel it.

PS in terms of " Need Not Want", I WANTED the 4 chocolate eclairs that were selling in Morrisons for £1 a box today, but my waistline didn't NEED them. So I walked away. And I feel PROUD of myself.

Not sure where you live but has your local town/city have any free museums/art galleries etc.

I'm a bit of an outdoors type so every 3 weeks I join my local wildlife trust and have a help out at our local nature reserve. Also join up for a litter pick every once in a while. Might not float your boat, but social and you get that warm feeling of having done some good as well.

Now is nearly the time to start some seeds off on the windowsill, aldi have packs for 39p.

Do you have children? Or borrow someone elses! Feed the ducks, or some cinema's have saturday morning clubs, very cheap films.

How about googling a cafe approx. 3 miles away. Set yourself a target to walk there, have a treat cup of coffee, and walk back. (Borrow someone's dog!)

  • Ooo, my dyed clothes have turned out really well! Two beige/flesh coloured tops have come out a nice share of turquoise, unfortunately I don't like the colour my white top turned out... I might stick it in with my red dye and maybe end up with a purpley concoction...

Thank for the ideas 365days, it's quite tough here, I don't know people with pets to borrow, and I'm not allowed my own (house share), I do like to go for walks, but very much hate driving to anywhere for a walk! It doesn't feel free otherwise... I will go check out the museum one day though, I keep forgetting it's there!

Another vote here for mooncup :) Ive had mine 8 years (since they first went into business I think) decided I needed to replace it for a new one, then went back to tampons for a month, I shouldn't have bothered, I so missed the mooncup I now happily have my replacement!
    LBM 1.1.16 = £27096.59 - now £17,020.38

    Paydbx 2017 - £3588.90/£7000 = 51.27% - number 74

    Paydbx 2016 - £6487.31/£7000 = 92.67% - number 74

Is it adequate for post-partum use?

I had an IUD for years so periods were somewhat irrelevant to me for that time and a panty liner was more than up to the job, but in a few weeks I'm going to get the full horror of the monthlies back again and I need to decide on how to manage it. I'm just seeking opinions as I have no experience of cups.

    There's a Mooncup thread here:

    https://forums.moneysavingexpert.com/discussion/196357

which should answer a lot of the questions. I veer between months where my periods are very heavy and months where there is hardly anything and I would say the only difference I would notice is that I need to change it more often when it is heavy but it holds LOADS.

The only slightly annoying thing is that you need to take a bottle of water into the cubicle with you to wash it (you can use toilet paper, but water is better) if you are at work or using a public toilet. Or if I am out then I might use the disabled toilet if there is a sink. But it's a minor inconvenience.

I would say that if you are in the least bit icky about your periods, hate the sight of blood and even tampons bother you, you ain't going to get on with the mooncup. Also you have to be fairly comfortable with"fiddling around inside" with your fingers, if you know what I mean. Possibly this isn't the best thread to be discussing this if guys are reading but it has to be said!
