  • Can I join in too :) After many months being a lurker this thread has prompted me to finally suck it up and post :D

This need not want think is brilliant and something my nana instilled in me as I was growing up she always bought me practical and useful presents :)

Sadly the mantra went out of the window a bit when I went to university those interest free over drafts are just too tempting

Now as a new graduate in a tough job market my finances need a complete overhaul and this thread has really inspired me!

So today I'm feeling quite proud of myself as I managed to go to a certain toiletries shop and only bought shampoo which I needed and I got two bottles for the price of one so I consider it a win win situation :D

    Welcome aboard Pandabunnie.

I was thinking about presents the other day. This is going to sound so ungrateful but I was always a little disappointed in the amount of money my mum gave me for birthdays. It seemed such a little amount (£30) when I used to just go and buy whatever I wanted anyway!! (On credit of course)

Now I am so looking forward to my birthday and know I will really treasure that money and use it to buy something I really really want. Before I would just put it my purse and would be spent without thought.

That makes me sound awful, but it's how I was. Money held no value for me whatsoever.

  • Thank you 365days :D

I know what you mean sometimes to my own fault I still feel a little disappointed at Christmas as my sister is seven and always has a massive present pile! However I love her to bits and there's nothing better than seeing her face as she's opening her presents :) Also as an only child for so long I can imagine my piles were equally as big at that age :o

I live quite far away from my family now so they usually just send money which I am very grateful for as I still use it for things I need that I would not be able to afford otherwise. This year I bought a new DSLR in the sales as I'm a stop motion animator so a good camera is an essential but they can be quite pricey at £500 for a basic kit from a well known camera maker

Thankfully I got a brilliant camera for £110 with all of my Christmas money and it was so worth it :D
  • I know what you mean 365days, I used to just buy what I wanted when I wanted regardless of how I was paying for it, when I think about the money I have wasted...

I still buy what I want when I want now, but generally without using credit. Although I need to change that way of thinking with baba on the way.

I remember getting rid of a credit card about 6 years ago, then getting another one to take on holiday a year after that. Didn't use it, went on a course for work and went shopping with a couple of the girls every lunch time and ran up a massive bill. Didn't need anything that I bought but was trying to keep up with the others. :(

I then used it for bits and bibs, used it here and there and before I knew it, I had a huge bill. And nothing to show for it. (not unmanageable though) just annoying. My dad got an extremely low loan for me and I paid it off, and now pay my dad. I will finish paying him in May. :D

Going on to birthday money I was given £15 from my nan for my birthday at beginning of jan, and I still haven't spent it. :D and can't think of anything I need or want. So saving it at mo.

I still feel guilty about a time when my mum bought be a bar of fudge - I must have been about 11. I remember vividly sitting in the lounge eating it thinking how measly it was and being totally ungrateful. It's over 20yrs ago now and I still have the urge every now and again to apologise to my DM about it (and she doesn't even have a clue, nor would she remember). :o:o

  • I have now read all 20 pages of this thread and have to say it has really inspired me! For the last few days I have been asking myself do I NEED this or do I really just WANT it and I'm sure I've already saved myself over a tenner! :jIt has also helped me to find some more things to list on ebay....I really don't need half of the carp I have got!

Great to hear so many of you are doing so well, let's keep up the good work :T
  • Hi All

I think this is going to work for me!:j

Went to Mr Mossies for the weekly shop, took a list of what we NEEDED and only £20 in my purse. Got 5 large bags of shopping, bread, milk, cheese veggies etc, added it up as I went round the shop and got reduced veg where possible, then when I knew there was enough left went and had a look at the chilled reductions and added a couple of bargains for the freezer (things I would normally buy anyway not things I just liked to look of). Even had enough left for a bunch of reduced flowers which were a WANT but a very cheap one and will brighten up the lounge and my life for a couple of weeks!!:T

    Good luck everyone.

  • re: the popcorn, currently, our only outgoing that is a want is our monthly cinema passes. We are as tight as anything regarding these; We often go and see 2 films back to back (save on fuel) and NEVER buy anything in the cinema. I don't care if we are seen as not playing the game. We always take a bottle of water each though (recycled bottles with filtered tap water though)

    Feeling despondant today :(
Realised yesterday that my MOT must be due soon & speaking to DH last night about a grinding noise he thinks I need new brake shoes on the rear. Luckily he can fit them (I love handy men!) but still £27 I hadn't budgeted for (and can't afford to budget for) out of my £20 a week misc spends. On top of hot chocolate & cake I definitely didn't NEED with friends yesterday, but did WANT
I feel like I take two steps forward & three back! Trying to clear a small Christmas debt on my CC without an income is hard enough.
TBH I'd love to give my car up as I don't enjoy driving anymore (too many !!!!!! on the road) but it would take me hours to do the slightest thing plus I'd have to cross 2 dual-carriageways (with the pushchair) to get to anything except neigbouring houses :/
    Sorry - rambling now!
    C xx
