    Debt-free and Proud!
I'm another turning 40 this year.....

For 2013 I am taking up a promotion which is exciting and terrifying in equal measures - trying to stay positive (great boss, supportive and great company) on that and not give in to nerves!

I have decided I must take better care of me so invested in some lovely cleanser and moisturiser and am getting in the habit of using daily. I really need to lose weight so am considering a gym. Need to get back into the routine of weekly shopping to aid this - soooo easy to just pop to the shops and spend more than necessary on junk etc.

Hubby is considering working away again and it would be for longer stretches of time, the positive to this is I have never lived alone, it could be the best of both worlds :)

I guess it will sound selfish but this year is more about me than anyone else - its overdue.

Lovely idea. I am hoping 2013 brings us more stability, this last year was really disruptive with a few positives but a lot of unpleasantness too. Now that OH is in a short term contract with a good possibility of being made permanent in Feb things are still uncertain but looking up again. A lot of plans were put off suddenly when she lost her job, but with luck we will be able to pick them up again, especially the plans to buy a house and perhaps to re-train for a new career. I enjoy my current job but it has no real ladder to climb so I feel like it may be time to move on.

Ongoing no matter what will be the efforts to declutter the hoard - you wouldn't see the difference yet, but I know it's there - for instance, there is now space in the wardrobe to hang everything which needs hanging.

We will also be seriously trying to lose weight this year. I have already been trying to move more - taking the ferrets out for a walk a few times a week when it's not actually raining. They don't need to go for walks as they have enough space in the lounge to play and explore, but the 2 I have now actually behave quite well when walking together and seem to enjoy it, except when it's really cold and Indigo demands to be picked up to snuggle either in my pocket or the top of my coat with her head sticking out under my chin. It cheers me up to go for a walk with them, and excites a lot of children too, as well as quite a few adults... Hopefully the weather will let me get out with them a bit more in 2013!
    Trust me - I'm NOT a doctor!

Thanks for this. I had no idea the BBC had resources like this. My son is married to a Puerto Rican girl and they intend to settle in Puerto Rico. That means our grandchildren will be bi-lingual but Spanish will be their first language. I've decided I'm going to begin to learn Spanish in 2013 so I will be able to communicate well with them. This is brilliant so thanks again, I'll start tomorrow. :T

It is well worth anyone learning something new checking out podcasts on itunes and videos on you tube- a quick search quickly gets you lots of free resources. In the last couple of years I've been learning to sew this way!

I am positive I will be grey by end of year, Ok, so whats the worse that can happen if you do go grey, I have pepper and salt hair, but 5 years ago I was going through chemo and had no hair at all

I am positive I will be worse off financially as cost of living continues to rise,
OK along with the majority of the population it means more belt tightening and positive that for the 5th year in a row my wages will not rise that too isn't great, but you at least at the moment have a job and positively certain they will fall with a new company taking over the contracts in February.also not great, but again if you have work that at least is a positive thing. My son-in-laws wages were cut with 'reorganisation' and it was a case of take what's offered, or on your way He has a mortgage and a handful of children so at the age 42 accepted what was offered as he couldn't afford to turn it down, it means my DD has to work full-time to supplement his money, and I too have to help out with childcare,we all pull together to help each other in difficult times./QUOTE]

I do hope that for you and many others in this situation things will improve. If by altering your mindset it helps a little to think with a positive outlook, most things can be turned around a bit
So all though things seem horrible and depressing do try to think, as a lot on here already have done about turning things around a little and trying to see the tiny ray of light ahead of you.I know this may sound trite, but I honestly do believe that out of the most awful things can come something better.
Even if its only doing something you never have tried before that small sense of achievement does give you a small boost in your confidence
Good luck to you in the coming year

I think this is a lovely idea for a thread. It is all too easy to get caught up in the day to day and to lose sight of the wonderful things we have around us.

This year I am planning to make the most of what I have in all areas of my life.

Here is to a happy and healthy 2013:j
Taking responsibility one penny at a time!
  • Hi everyone Brilliant thread JackieO and am already feeling inspired just reading what you all have written.
I want to lose weight about a stone and maybe a little more. I want peace and less stress for both my lovely husband and myself (ongoing stress with my ds) and be more positive in my thinking. I want to save as much as we can and for me to buy NO MORE fabric and yarn:) as I have too much. I feel blessed to have what we have( a roof over our heads enough to eat and heat and in my book we are rich in what matters)
I love this thread and enjoy reading what people post and would like to wish each one of you a very Happy New Year for 2013.
Do a little kindness every day.;)

I want to work towards a more sustainable life without the need to work for a company. I have made huge efforts in the past few years to cut back spending massively, I still have a way to go but my outgoings are now small, allowing me to finally look at being able to do this

My job outlook doesn't look too great in 12 months time. I have put myself in a position where even if I had to take a MW job I could sustain my lifestyle, and I would do that rather than not work but I wouldn't want to.

I want to work on bringing my costs down further by growing more veg, becoming less reliant on consumerism and becoming more self sufficient. I don't mean in a flippy floppy hippy type of way and running off to live off the grid but I want to explore things this year that will enable me to pull further away from having to conform to the norms that we seem to accept today.

I will not be buying any clothes/shoes at all in 2013. I want to work less for more not more for less, so I will be exploring ways that I can work for myself, perhaps freelancing in my old profession, for say 3 months a year, freeing up the rest of the time to do the things that I enjoy.

I know it wont happen this year but I feel the steps that I will be taking this year and things that I will be putting in place will factor in making it happening in the future.
Dont wait for your boat to come in 'Swim out and meet the bloody thing' ;)

:DLove the thread Jackie, and if no-one mind's I'd like to share a poem.

    Smiling is infectious;
You catch it like the flu.
When someone smiled at me today,I started smiling too.
I passed around the corner, and someone saw me grin.
When he smiled I realised, I'd passed it on to him.
I thought about that smile, then realised its worth, a single smile, just like mine could travel round the earth.....
so if you feel a smile begin don't leave it undetected, let it start an epidemic and get the world infected:)

2013 is gong to be my year. I turn 40, smack bang in the middle of it so I'm damn well going to be in control.

I'm aiming to be spending far less, earning more and getting fitter. I'm also going to learn to say "no" I'm sick of doing things out of duty or because I'm to scared of hurting people's feelings.

Basically, I'm going into this new year at full speed and I don't plan to stop until I've broken through the other end of it.

You and me both!! I am also 40 this year, where has the time gone? And I want to be fitter, have better mental health (is means saying NO!) and having my own life!!! Good luck x

Jackie O, just come back from my skip run! Who knew Christmas could bring so much junk - mostly paper and packaging but some bits that couldn't be recycled. Now need to attack the main room and then I'm finished!
Me, OH, grown DS, (other DS left home) and Mum (coming up 80!). Considering foster parenting. Hints and tips on saving £ always well received. Xx

March 1st week £80 includes a new dog bed though £63 was food etc for the week.
  • Ohhh lovely thread, thanks JackieO:D

I am a bit of a stressy person and do need to try to remind myself to relax sometimes :o so

    • Pamper myself every so often - I have loads of smellies to use up so it's not going to cost anything!:)
    • Learn to meal plan properly :o
    • Write shopping lists / stick to them and my grocery budget
    • Make more things myself - always wanted to make jams & chutneys (have started saving jam jars!)
    • Sort the garden out & get more veg planted
    • Get new tyres for my bike & start using it again!
    • Crochet / Knit / Sew - have finally got a table for the SM so no excuses not to sew / went to a crochet course this year but haven't kept it up / there's also a knitting group in the village that I've thought of joining for several years ... :o
    • Try to lose some of the weight I've put on (difficult as med related & I'm still on them!)
    • Find a new job
    • Have loads of fab walks with the dog ... take advantage of all those wonderful beaches & woods we have right on the doorstep!
    • Keep the spreadsheets up to date & stick to my budgets
Well ... that's quite a list I've managed to drum up :o seems I've a lot of things to do!:D
    Grocery Challenge £211/£455 (01/01-31/03)
    2016 Sell: £125/£250
    £1,000 Emergency Fund Challenge #78 £3.96 / £1,000
    Vet Fund: £410.93 / £1,000
