Hi all, just been catching up on the weekend's posts.About the SINS debate, I don't have SINS, although I really think you should. That's what healthy eating is all about isn't it. It stops you depriving yourself etc.
My trouble is, once I get a taste of a "yummy" I can't stop at 10 SINS worth. Eating 1 Freddo was never gonna be enoughI wish I could play the "everyting in moderation" game, but I'm a greedy frog/pig, and I have no off switch.
I mainly use my syns for chocolate & I always save them for the end of the day so i've always got a treat to look forward to.
This is what I was going to say CH - Frogga, this may not work for you but I'm not one for moderation either and I find if I have my night time treat (Freddo or similar) too early it just makes me want more, so I only have it when I go to watch TV upstairs, then when I've had it that's it, I'm upstairs for the night so no going back down to the kitchen. Sounds a bit silly but works. Also started having frozen berries and yogurt after tea if still peckish, provides a bit of a sweet treat amd allows me to keep the proper treat until later.I try and stay off 'treat' syns as I have the 'no stop button' too. I use my syns in meals for example I had gravy with my meal this evening. I had breaded haddock in the week because money is tight and it was in the freezer from before I started SW. I know if I treated myself to something like a kitkat the whole packet would be gone and I would then start on something else.
I'm the opposite. Someone on here last year who had lost loads and got to target (can't remember who exactly) said they would never use syns for something they could have syn free, e.g. packet or jar of sauce when they could make their own, or to use your example, breaded fish when they could 'bread' it with something syn free. I'm a bit like that - occasionally use a few syns for convenience but really it's all about the treats. Funny how we all do it different ways!2011: [STRIKE]Houses[/STRIKE], [STRIKE]weddings[/STRIKE], [STRIKE]cats[/STRIKE]

I love the SW way of eating and I won't ever change it. What I am hoping is that I can combine the two (SW and calorie counting) and start losing again.
I discussed this with a friend last night and someone else also mentioned to me that I should have my thyroid checked so that's another thing that I'll be speaking to the doctor about tomorrow.
Anyway I was up and out at 6am this morning for a 40-minute walk so that's earned me an extra 284 calories for today!!!!
I think that what I need to work on is keeping the non-natural sugars down to below the recommended target and not worry so much about those in the fruit and veg as long as I limit the amount of fruit I eat to 2 or 3 piece a day. I have some frozen berries that I'm going to use today and see what they work out at.
Our consultant has always said that we shouldn't have too many grapes and bananas probably for the reasons you're citing. I'm not a fruit fan so have most of my SFs from veg. I'd have thought you have a fair few salads too mm so they should be OK.
I was thinking again about how healthy eating SW is in general. It's not as if we're forcing ourselves to eat some faddy way which is harmful to health. Ironically, the things that people seem to worry about (fruit, flavoured yogurts and sweetener based things) aren't favourites of mine.
I've had porage for breakfast ( a bit mad on a sunny day but it's filled me up) and I've got some pork marinating for a casserole later. Not sure about lunch but probably stir-fry a few veg (carrots, cabbage, beansprouts, peppers) and have with some cold meat. I had a dessert spoon of syrup, small juice with breakfast and there's a few syns in the marinade but that's all I've planned for today.
Back soon.:)0 -
Thanks for the links you posted Prudent - when stress was mentioned I was expecting cortisol to come up, so will try and have a look later. Might also ask OH to see if he has any opinion on it.Great to hear from you Stef, how typical of you to pop out once you could see the dilema  you're a good egg.
I'm a bit concerned too now I've read the portions of fruit recommended. I ate a HUGE bunch of red grapes on the was home from work on friday, 2 punnets of pinapple, and raspberries, and blueberries! I eat them like sweets! My sugar intake would be massive.
But I don't want to cut downI like stuffing with fruit, surely you can't get fat from eating too much fruit? Loads of peeps on SW eat unlimited fruit don't they?
Hmmmmmmm
Frogga, it seems to me from what you've said about how often you eat and eating something like 'fruit as sweets' that whilst you've massively changed what you eat, you may not have changed your eating habits as much? Are you really hungry between meals or do you feel like you always need to be nibbling on something, maybe just as something to do? Maybe that is something to consider if you're worried about your fruit/sugar intake, and maybe plan times to have a snack in between meals and do something else to occupy yourself at the other times that won't allow grazing. I may be completely off track here but it's just something that has struck me from what you've posted. You've done so well and you WILL be able to get more off if you want to, sometimes we all need a bit of a shake up and to see things with new eyesI have had my first 'negative issue' with the SW diet today. After the discusssion about the Turkish delight Mullerlight, I duly bought 10 mullerlights on the £3 offer. Although I liked them, I have to admit to much preferring Greek yoghurt, especially the Total fat free one. I have had the last muller tonight and had a wee read of the pot and was not pleased to find it contains aspartame this can cause a lot of unpleasant effects (see: http://www.relfe.com/aspartame_92.html) one of which is weight gain! Mullers now off my shopping list!
Thanks for that. There have been discussions about aspartame and Mullerlights on here before- it is a contentious issue but even though I'm not a fan of sweeteners (mainly the taste), from looking at the research it seems there isn't actually that much wrong with them. Whether they cause the body to crave sugary foods is up for debate but the methanol thing is a load of rubbish - I'll see if I can find the post I wrote about it.
ETA: old posts: here and hereYou're right prudent, people have different views about aspartame but if you don't want it then steer clear of Mullers. I agree that Total 0% is ace although expensive. I'm not even a yogurt lover but I enjoy that as a cream substitute. I suppose on the sweetener debate it depends on both your view of them in general and how much of a sweet tooth you have. I bought a tub of Canderel (not sure of its ingredients) and it's still going strong a year or more later as I rarely sweeten anything.
Super ideas beanie. I eat fruit as a snack sometimes but mixed with other things so perhaps frozen berries with Total or an apple chopped into a bowl of FF cottage cheese. As we've discussed recently all cold meats but the chicken tikka bits are a favourite of mine. Then there's beetroot or cornichons straight from the jar:o....
Welcome smilersgran, you're in the right place.
Total is crazily expensive but Asda do their own fat free greek yog for £1 for 500g. Don't know if any of the other supermarkets do a fat free one as my mum has looked in Tesco and Morrisons, and I've looked in Sains and haven't seen anything. I'm also addicted to frozen berries and yogurt - got some (well I say some- was the last 4 punnets!) from Aldi on Saturday, which I think you told us about Maman, so thanks for the tip - save £2 on the same amount from Asda:money:

Lantanna - you and I are definitely working off the same page here so hopefully we can beat this together.I'm the opposite. Someone on here last year who had lost loads and got to target (can't remember who exactly) said they would never use syns for something they could have syn free, e.g. packet or jar of sauce when they could make their own, or to use your example, breaded fish when they could 'bread' it with something syn free. I remember that conversation too Blodwen (also can't remember who it was). I'm the complete opposite because I do use my syns for light mayo and humous and techina (these are the main culprits). If I start on chocolate I know I won't be able to limit myself.
The support group that I was attending works on the psychological issues of why we're overweight and what we need to do to change it. One of the things they asked us early on in the group (it was for 24 meetings) was to commit to giving up a certain food or foods that would never pass our lips again. For me those were bought pizza and bourekas. I'm glad to say that I've not given in to either of them and can't imagine that I ever will. I think if I were asked to make another commitment then I would also add pitta and raisins to it as these are both things I have problems with - and one is never enough.Mediterranean Mum
hoping to lose 50lb by February 2013! 2st lost so far :j0 -
Part 3, lol!
Stef - good to see you back. Hope you're ok and not getting too fed up over stalling. Are you still going to your other healthy eating classes? Hope your son gets better soon and it doesn't interfere with his exams too much.
Right, all catching up done! Had a lovely weekend- rare that we actually do something on a bank holiday! Got a load of gardening done on Saturday (heavy stuff - filling in a pond and cutting down bushes), then went to Alton Towers with hubs and a friend on Sunday, stayed at friend's on Sun night then went to Warwick Castle for a bit yesterday before coming home earlyish (just as well after seeing/hearing about the number of accidents on the motorway) and cycled over to fat club in the sun. Lost 1lb which is fine but was hoping for a bit more given that I've been 100% and did a fair bit of exercise. Oh well, is * week although my gains seem to come the week after so not sure I can use that as an excuse! Took all my own food for the weekend- pasta and roast veg for the lunchtimes and cereal bars and fruit for snacks, drank water and diet coke. Had a pub tea on Sun and had a chicken breast burger (no coating, just a piece of grilled chicken) on a bun with salad and a bit of salsa, and I had salad with low fat dressing instead of chips and just had one of OH's chips (was cold anyway so wasn't missing much!). Felt really good to be in control and I enjoyed the meal probably more than I would have if I'd picked something more synful.
Need to do a meal plan for the week today- haven't even decided what I'm doing for tea tonight yet, which isn't like me
Torn between EE and green:
B: Weetabix (B), milk (A), banana
L: Mugshot, apple, 2 plums
T: Not sure- if green, maybe Quorn burgers (2) on a pitta (B+1) with cheese (A) and chips and salad, ketchup (1)
S: Pineapple, yogurt, Freddo (5)

Looks yummy stef.
I can see that Tesco have a fat free Greek style yogurt listed so might be worth a look Blodwen. I did a sort of DIY pudding last summer when we had people round. A big bowl of raspberries and strawberries, some meringues, cream and Greek yogurt. Everyone could make their own pavlova or Eton mess to their own taste or just have fruit.0 -
oh god but i love bannanas and grapes ... oh yeah and i lose on average 3.5 lb a week so to be fair your consultant should say that it could be an issue but not for everyone
Exactly the point Rob - what works for one doesn't necessarily work for another and it's unfair of the consultant to insist that everyone can freely eat of the "free" foods and expect to lose weight. I do think this point needs to be stressed a bit more by the consultants.Part 3, lol!

What a lovely weekend Blodwen and great planning. Don't be disheartened by the small loss - a loss is a loss and if you continue with the great planning then I'm sure you'll see it next week.Mediterranean Mum
