loopchris. good on resistig the cable spool. Here's a great post from another thread
You will always have a reason to keep an object - you need to find a better or several reasons to get rid of it

So you could repurpose that apple crate into a perfect little hedgehog house. One day  but
    • your OH will leave you if you don't reduce the carp in the garage so they can park the car in there
    • you know there are no hedgehogs in your immediate area
    • it's easy to dispose of because it's just wooden slats that could be broken down and poked into a wheely bin anyway
    • in the event that you ever saw a hedgie you could easily get another crate form the market
    • you are not emotionally attached to it
    • you've got better things to do with your time
    • and something has got to go so it might as well be this crate!

Early morning declutter for me today. Cleared out the sideboard and managed to get rid of half the contents. My OH wanted to hang on to all the CDs that he's not listened to for 6 years, persuaded him to half them at least.

    Decluttered:

    6 games
    Bag of CDs
    3 folders of papers
Place mats (keep finding these lurking in odd places)
    Tapes

Someone asked about a mantra, what I've found helpful is to think: just because it's technically useful, doesn't mean I have to keep it.

E.g. bottles of body lotion from gift sets, yes they are useful in theory, but I'm never going to use them, so get rid. Same for unplayed games, pictures I'm not that keen on, etc.

Getting clutter to leave the house isn't my problem - replacing it almost immediately is. I decided today that this would be my motto for 2013.

I take these into work and use them as handcream.

I was wondering if anyone had any mantras or affirmation type statements that helped let go of stuff. Having no money I am so reluctant to throw things away in case I need them, then have to rebuy them. I know I need to shake this mind set. Any ideas what I could focus on motivate myself?

Are there any items that you're thinking of getting rid of?Have you used them in the last year?If not,do you think you'll use them again?Thinking like this has helped me declutter last year.Having said that,I haven't used my Kenwood in quite a while, but would not consider getting rid of it!

Hi ChihiroSen - I have no trouble throwing things away - but DD and OH find it difficult - take a small area - say your wardrobe - remove everything and then put all the items you wear regularly back in the wardrobe (if you are anything like me this is about 8 items lol), then put your coat, things you wear occasionally like your sunday best lol. Then see what is left behind - sort thru that - my mantra is if you havent used it or worn in in the last 12 months throw it - but if that's difficult, bag it up or move it to another place out of sight - if you don't retrieve it over the next 6 months - bin it!

    Good luck
