Got some good ones at Sainsbury's on christmas eve, 2 big trays of finest stuffing reduced from £6 each to £2 which did us nicely on christmas day!
They also had whole turkeys for £5-£10 but my mum doesn't eat poultry unfortunately! Some good ready meals picked up for the freezer too though, around 50p each and they were the decent brands. Oh and some finest fishcakes for 75p!

Went to Asda today and there were so many reductions, the section was packed even at 3pm with lots of 20p items! We got:
    Houmous selection -£2 to 82p
    Pasta Salad- £1.97 to 20p
    Smoked Salmon Blinis - I think £3 to 20p
    Pot of olives - £1 to 50p
Garlic Mushrooms - 50p for a big packet!
    Kingsmill Scotch pancakes - 20p
Smoked salmon pate with oatcakes - 50p
And various 50p-£1 ready meals to freeze.

Anyone living near an asda, especially if it's the one in Cannock, give it a visit just after 3pm tomorrow and hopefully you'll find some really good bits :)

ASDA in Lincoln was doing the same! I got a load of pears. Yum!
Now I am employed, lets get rid of this student debt! :D:D

hardly any meat and not much knocked off.
no bread -ohh not a good sign.

but hit better luck on chilled me and another lady got chatting she was doing exactly same as me e decided what we wanted then went to grocery bric brac section by frozen.

    well on chilled got

    1pack fresh stuffing 60p-freezer
2packs short dated 6pk walkers stars crisps 49p so 98p for 12packs wish i had brought more of these.
Not huge amount extra that i can recall.

    spent £12.

Then took a risk on tesco metro-went in by myself.

saw the guy reducing bakery items and old biddies going up to him with fresh items and he was willing to reduced down.

I got few bakery bits as in rolls for 17p, donuts for 12p.

I then found no fruit or veg reduced,

but on chilled section it was full and last cut had not been done.

he then came along with trolly and polity gave him stuff i was interested in and helped him put it back on bays.

got faitta dinner kit with chicken and wraps was £3.89 now 87p got 3

    so approximatly 5family meals
    and 4readymeals 1 each
2 differet meals for kids as 2kids readymeals feed all 3 my kids and gojons with oven chips and peas be grand.

    Got 4fullbags for less than 9quid .

went to morrisions busy hardly any reductions one they did have was crap ended up spending 12 quid on essential stuff we needed milk, juice, cheese.

lastly spar slim pickings no bread but did get 19 mini cheesecake for hubby, 2covent garden soups 52p i like them rest of family dont so thats 2lunches for me.

2pack sausages at 65p 8pk again 2meals worth probably sausage casserole or sausages and oven chips. spent whopping £2.50.

got home unpacked it all and sorted through freezer.

I've been on my first ever yellow stickered hunt today. Need to start spending less money on food now i'm on maternity leave and having my income reduced.

Got quite a few bargains in my local Mr T.
*Bit bag of pre-sliced carrots 10p
    *2 x cold pasta salads 18p each
    *Stir-fry mix 15p
    *Tuna sandwich spread 41p
    *Pasta ready-meal 72p
*Couple of meat snack packs for DP 30p each

Then i went onto MR M and got:
    *Garlic bread 15p
    *Bread rolls 9p
    *Cheesy mash potato 25p
    *Wraps 35p

My only problem is i only know what time the stores reduce around here on a Sunday, during the week its hit and miss and never seems to be the same time so i'm hardly ever able to bag a bargain.

Our local tesco definately got their stock control wrong today. The reduced counter was heaving with whoopsies. The poor sa didn't know where to start. Mostly party food and quite a few cream cakes. There is hope for us whoopsie hunters yet!
  • I have been buying reduced items for years-got OH well trained to keep his eyes open too-. If you were to take a look in any cupboard, fridge, freezer I challenge you to find an item that we paid full price for. My budget (which has to include laundry powder, loo rolls etc) is a strict £45 per week.{3 adults}. Took a trip to Morries on xmas eve cos they were to be shut for 2 days, unlike most other shops closing one day. Fish counter was clearing all fresh stock for 29p each. But I dont think the young assistant had listened to instructions properly. He was handing over any amount of requests all at the same price. Somebody asked for all the remaining trout (about a dozen fish) and he stuck a 29p ticket on!!!!!!
  • I got a good deal the other day. We're having family round for a meal on New Year's Day so I was looking out for reduced party food to freeze. I got 3 boxes of vol au vents for 3p each then a multibuy offer on them took £1 off my shopping at the till so I was effectively paid to take them away!

This time of year is a good time for reductions on 'normal' food like pizzas, pies etc as when most of the fresh items came onto the shelves 7-10 days ago, many customers were concentrating their shopping on the Christmas food.

At work today, colleagues were given free tubs of fresh custard as we had loads. Obviously HQ thought people would have Xmas pud with custard or made our own trifles (cheaper to buy them ready made). Customers had them down to 10p each
  • We are a family of 4 (two children under 3 yrs old) and on a single (but reasonably well paid) wage and (thanks to all the great tips on this board!) are recent newbie fans of the Reduced sections at Tescos and Waitrose.

Being on maternity leave has made me realise how "time poor" we were in the pre-child days hence the overspend on high quality convenience foods. When we were both working long hours there was no way either of us would have cooked from scratch during the week. Now that we are relatively "time rich" but earning less as a family we are still managing to eat very well (if not better than before!) thanks to all the Sunday Reductions!

Last week we managed to get a meal from Waitrose reduced from £6 to 67p plus milkshakes for 10p. I've noticed that Waitrose seem to do the best reductions, most things going down to between 10p-50p and all good quality items too.

Love reading about all of your bargains btw. To be honest I think we're doing the supermarkets a favour as they need to get rid of the food and if we weren't buying all these reduced items then the items would just go down as a big "loss" on their books. Looking forward to more bargain shopping just after New Year!

    Happy New Year all :)

That is the big question, would they go down as a loss? Or would the supermarkets get the money back another way?

Do they claim the money they loss from reductions back from the tax man. Or do they simply add on a few extra pennies to everything to make up for the reductions.

i.e. They have X number of loaves they need to sell at £1 each to make a good profit. But they know they will have to reduce the last few to 10p to get rid of them. So they set the price of the loaves at £1.20, and the extra 20p they get makes up for the money they loss from the reductions.

I don't pretend to know how supermarkets work, but I do know that there is nothing bought in this country that is not paid for by either the customer or the tax payer.

You may get to the till and pay 10p for a loaf that was on sale for £1 (or £1.20) yesterday, but you can bet your life that the supermarket has either already had the other 90p (£1.10) off you, or it's coming out of your taxes at some point this tax year.
