    Where I didn't mention them, usernames and passwords can be selected freely - so chose whatever you like.

    I haven't tried them all, but see how you get on. :D

    Oliver.
    Dear Oliverkinne, Could you let me know how you were able to set up this German isp connection in easy steps for an internet surfing beginner please? I am registered with https://www.1899.com and am a NTL customer. Tanx, Paddydr

    Well, since he hasn't reply, I might be able to help you, at least try.

    You have to go in set up a new modem connection. There, it will ask to name the connection. In the next step you'll have to give the username and password (either those mentionned by oliverkinne, or when none is specified one of your own choice), and a phone number.
    I am on bt, and I know the acess is different from ntl. As far as I know, aou will have to fill in the access phone nunber for ntl, then a separator (try a "." to pause according to what I read ealier in the forum), then the access number.

    However, I think the charge when you are on ntl is 1p/min, not free... so you might as well stick with other solutions proposed by Martin.
  • I've just received an email from one of my ISP's Ace Internet.
    ##start quote##
    We are pleased to announce the launch of our brand new dialup service, AceDial Turbo.

    AceDial turbo works just like our standard dialup service, only using the latest compression technologies that allow you to browse the web up to 5 times the speed of our standard dialup service to give you near broadband download speeds on a normal dialup connection.

    Some other ISP's are charging around £25 per year for similar services - we are offering this service it to our customers FREE OF CHARGE!

    ===============================================================
    How does AceDial Turbo work?
    ===============================================================

    AceDial Turbo instantly compresses the data you are downloading from the internet, so that it loads faster onto your computer saving you time and money.

    I think this is the same as OnSpeed the difference is Ace Internet are offering this free, check
    http://www.ace-internet.co.uk/turbo.html

  • I'm an NTL customer and I have their unmetered dial-up serivce. This used to be £12.50 per month and they are increasing it to £13.50. Consequently, I've been searching for an altervative provider that doesn't require a BT line and it is difficult. I have found the following but I don't know if they are any good:-

    https://www.adeptinternet.co.uk

    £8.95 per month.
    maximum 80 hours per month.
    contention = 15:1.

    Has anyone used them? Are they any good? Does anyone know any other providers that allow customers with an NTL line?

    Does this company provide a service for Telewest Cable as well as NTL Cable if not do you know a company that does?

    Not sure. It clearly states that you need an NTL or BT line. It might be worth contacting them. I would have thought you could have a Telewest line, becuase it is basically a cable service, which is the same as NTL. I believe Telewest and NTL are merging soon, so this might make a difference!?

    Thank you Virginie, I did manage to connect to the German ISP (Freenet.de) via 1899 on NTL using the following: 08081707474, 004922126090707
    On my bill from 1899 I was charged 3p connection charge AND 1p/min.

    You were right. I wonder if it's worth me trying the other German ISP numbers. Or maybe someone will know a 0p/min ISP number via 1899 on NTL. Tanx.

    I don't see the attraction of calling USA and Germany ISPs. 1899's rates change from time to time, and these destinations have. And as you've discovered again, 1899 have different rates from non-BT lines anyway.

    Ask your UK ISP for a number to use.

    I've had no problem with calls to Germany using 1899 ! In fact, all my calls are priced at 2.999p in total. Last time I was on for 38 mins. Much cheaper than One Tel at 2 p per min. or a UK ISP on 0845 rates. However this is on a BT line and I have read before that NTL customers get charged more.

    I have been with Tesco unlimited dial up for about 2 years now. Speed is not bad and I have never had problems getting on line. It is £12.49 per month and you get club card points too!
    The best bargains are priceless!!!!!!!!!! :T :T :T
