  • ...I should have mentioned that I Googled for German ISPs that are free. There is one called freenet, which has its website at freenet.de. This means you really only pay 3p for the connection, but then nothing for as long as the connection lasts - so browsing is virtually free.

Never used them thankfully - you may already know of it - but always worth checking out the forums at https://www.ispreview.co.uk for any possible issues with ISPs etc.

Thanks - Ive never used Call1889 or similar so will have a look sometime - Could be a useful energency back up if my BB goes AWOL.
  • ...their sister company call18866 (please note - it's 1899 with only one 8, but 18866 with two eights - I know, it's confusing ;) ). The former for free calls to Germany (except for 3p connection charge) and the latter for free UK landline calls all day every day (except 1p connection charge). Since then the most I pay on phone bills is the line rental to BT. I wish there was a way not to have to pay any line rental - or a really small amount, but that's probably never going to happen. :)

    Oliver,

You are a star! I have registered for 1899 (with NTL!) One day (soon!) I will get around to trying out your idea. I hope the Germany free offer stays available. I will use them for other european calls too.

** OH DEAR, I suppose you are on BT line and can set your modem to dial the 18990049... number no problem. I am on NTL and have to dial O8081707474 ... wait for voice message...then dial 0049.... How can I set up my modem to pause before dialing the rest of the number???

Can you or anyone else say how the billing works... do they really just bill your credit card for a few pence each month? I'm surprised it's worth it for them with the credit card handling fees.

Oh and am shocked to see the underhand tactics used by FAST 4 !!! Martin if you read this I hope you warn people.

wig, they generally carry your bill forward if it doesn't amount to much, sometimes even 3/4 months.

and check out martin's call checker here for the cheapest international calls

oliver, the connection charge for 18866 is now 2p, still a great bargain :D

Wig, to get a pause in the dialling, experiment with a gap or a comma. Friends dial 9 for outside line and I think it goes 9 08089...
  • Thanks for this oliverkinne. I'll give it a try later.

Does anyone konw if German PAYG ISPs make money in the same way as UK ones, ie. take a portion of the call charge? If so, surely it means call1899 (or the company which sells it the call access) must have to pay the ISP. Since call1899 charges next to nothing for the call, someone has to pay, which means this model can't last(?).
