  • What I dont get are engagements but not naming the wedding day. You get engaged because you intend to marry. Get engaged- name the wedding day.

Surely you get engaged when one partner proposes? Which is why I don't understand the 'we're going to get engaged on my birthday' brigade/ If you already know you're going to get married, you're engaged, But I can certainly understand not deciding a date immediately - what if you announce the date and your brother says 'Oh, but I'm getting married the next day'.?

I agree Christmas is the wrong time (unless maybe at the end of the day when everyone else has gone home), a proposal is something I'd rather savour in private for a little while with my spouse to be, not share immediately with the whole family. It just comes across (to me) as a bit show offey and limelight hugging, a bit like announcing you're pregnant at someone else's wedding, suddenly the focus has to be all on the engaged couple.

Another engagement 'thing' I don't get is the public proposal (can anyone remember the woman who proposed to her bf on tv in front of his mates one valentine's day - poor sod!) and the everyone-knows-(s)he's-going-to-ask proposal!

Both my kids got baptised on (different) Christmas Days. Our minister loved to have a baby to baptise as part of the Christmas service and I was happy to oblige him, it meant all the family was there in one place and it gave us an extra reason to celebrate.

The worst Christmas engagement was when the bloke who had split up with me some months previously got engaged to another girl. I was at Bloke's sister's house that year (she was a good pal) and he telephoned her to tell her. Bad day. That engagement lasted two years btw, then he ended up with me again. When he suggested a Christmas engagement I nearly slapped him! But we've been married twenty years now, I've just about forgiven him. ;)

I agree here. Once you have decided to get married then you ae engaged. You can't plan to get engaged.

I think you can discuss the future vaguely/jokingly, like "one day maybe we'll get married" but i don't think that is the same as actually knowing/deciding to will marry thus getting engaged.

Indeed what is the incentive for a man in that situation when he can have everything a wife will give him without the commitment?

  • I hadn't realised it was common to get engaged around Christmas.:) I got engaged just before Christmas but it wasn't anything to do with that time of year.

we got engaged at christmas 2 years ago (just before the vat went up, we'd been living together for 18 months so i cant think what prompted the question;)) but it adds to christmas day giving each other the "aw we got engaged two years ago" hug.
