FTTC requires an engineer install and a new modem.
No free lunch, and no free laptop ;)

Are you sure that you are not talking about FTTH ?
FTTH requires the modem (due to having fibre to the home)
FT(T)C is only fibre to the cabinet (in my case about 200 yards away) - the cable from the cabinet to my home will be unchanged ........

I book visits every day, you DO need a visit.

Free for how long though- 6 months? And how long is the fibre contract for-12 months, 18 months?

New contract of 12 months, if BT wish to increase the charge after this time I will revert back or switch supplier. We already had the total broadband monthly charge reduced from £18 year before last down to £13 then further reduced last year down to £10 so can't see them increasing charge at the end of the contract. Just have to wait and see I suppose but whatever happens still have free fibre for at least 12 months.

The fibre cabinet that supplies my home is app 200 mtrs away and underground/overhead cable from there, still needed the new modem and faceplate installed by the engineer.

No I AM talking about FTTC.

With FTTC the transmission method used over your (now reduced length) of copper cable is changed from ADSL to VDSL to transmit the higher bitrate. Your existing modem router won't work with VDSL which is why you need to have a visit for a new modem to be installed. They install a new filter faceplate at the same time.

My local FTTC upgrade is now back to 31/3/2013-that's a year later than the original date-and I have zero confidence in the latest date given either. Upon the approach of the date, it gets shunted back 3 months each time.
I posted on another thread and that's exactly my experience in South London. Can understand delays of a month or maybe two but a year is BT taking the .... :(

I guess that depends on which isp you go with.

    Sky say:-
Sky Fibre Unlimited & Unlimited Pro: Availability subject to location and survey. £50 standard set-up. Not available to existing fibre customers except cable. Maximum download speeds: Sky Fibre Unlimited - up to 38Mb; Sky Fibre Unlimited Pro - up to 76Mb. Speeds vary by location.
