Katcocoa, Thanks for your reply about the barley. As for the lamb kidneys they dont need too much cooking, they will go tough and dry. Just fry them gently for a few minutes until cooked through and then add them to your pie just before it goes in the oven.
  • Thanks vangirl, last thing i want is dry kidneys!

Sunshine- you could add potatoes to mash but they would soak up all the moisture in the stew and everything would tastle a bit samey. I usually make roast potatoes or mash separately and have cabbage or another veg just for contrast really. Or for one pot meal you could just have big bowl of stew with crusty bread or add dumplings about 45 mins before serving. mmm, what is it about the word dumplings that instantly makes you hungry?
  • I tried the rice pudding recipe today as had some pudding rice in the cupboard for 10mths! It was lovely and easy, will have again.Mega cheap, loads of it and OH loved it too "better than tinned" no less!! Any other puds that are good done in the slow cooker?? Thanks to whoever put this recipe on Iread it this afternoon and it inspired me more than my sow cooker cookbook I have just sold! Must be the real people cooking for their real families/ themselves. P.S I'm the same about dumplings just reading that made me want some!!

  • Yesterday I cooked a gammon in the slow cooker. I added chopped onions, carrots, leeks, black pepper, a splash of worcester sauce and a couple of bay leaves to flavour it. We had the gammon last night with baby potatoes, cabbage, peas and a cheese sauce.

Today I have reheated the stock in the slow cooker, thrown in some barley, yellow split peas, red and green lentils and then added some chopped up left over gammon. It's made a delicious hearty soup that I'll serve with homemade bread tonight.

:j Can't wait to do a version of this, I've had a frozen bacon joint in the freezer for a year (don't ask, I know) This will do me for most of a week at home/work!:T

  • Just put 900g braising steak (from my new organic farmer who personally delivers!) in with red wine, stock, bay leaves, mixed herbs and couple of carrots and onions from my veg box. thinking about adding my kidneys at the end...I'm avoiding chopping them up, bit squeamish!

In my SC right now is Mulligatawny Soup.

    2 chopped onions
    4 small grated carrots
    1 large/2small finely chopped apples

fry for 2/3 minutes in a tablespoon of oil

add 1 or 2 tablespoon curry powder - or to taste
    and 1 tablespoon plain flour

    fry one minute

add 1 litre chicken stock (1 1/2 cubes)

bring to the boil and add 50 gramms red lentils

In SC on high 4/5 hours.

Just tasted it and it is GOOD!

In the book 'Real Food from your Slow Cooker' they put in 2 skinned chicken portions - no lentils and half the veg (no potato).

At the end puree the vegetables (I won't bother as they are not chunky) slice the chicken meat and put in the soup.

Season to taste with lemon juice and salt and pepper

    Last night we had:

    1 tin kidney beans
    1 tin baked beans
    1 tin black beans
    1 tin sweetcorn
    2 tsp crushed garlic
tbsp each of cumin, chilli powder and oregano

cooked on low all day, and served with tortilla wraps. It was lovely, and neither of us are vegetarians!

Bit new to this slow cooker lark but gaining in confidence now having tried a few recipes from here & had them very well received - am loving the 'chuck it in' aspect (great for using up random bits and bobs, had loads of hm soup in the freezer that has been largely untroubled - now brilliant base for just about everything!)

Our slow cooker is the 6.5l size, so I've been making up large batches & freezing for quick ready meals for those nights when we would usually have caved and got a takeaway.

So, on the go for tea tonight is a creamy chicken & mushroom thing I'm going to serve with the wild rice that's been lurking at the back of the cupboard for ages.

    Chicken pieces
    Huge box of mushrooms
Two cans condensed cream of mushroom soup
    Bit of veggie stock powder
    Can of water
    Lots of onion
    Lots of garlic.

Fried off onion & garlic, chucked everything together in sloco & gave it a stir - it's been smelling utterly fantastic since half-one, still an hour to go though - must get cracking earlier next time! :o

Thanks to all for sharing recipes & advice, this thread has become one of my favourite places on the net! :T

And my favourite place too, I feels slightly obsessed this weekend but in a good way and as a result I've only spent £1.70 which is good when you have no real cash! Be strong next week!!

Tried the muligatawny soup today for dinner next week at work and to freeze, looks promising!
